Most teacher researchers who work in research teams first publish their reports in a team collection. This collection of teacher research articles can be run off and bound or placed in a notebook and distributed to fellow staff members at school or placed in the school library. 1) When is a story ready to send out? Read the story aloud with a pencil in hand. Mark every sentence you stumble over, every passage you have to read twice to understand, the points where you lose interest or feel yourself drifting from the story, and every place you question what you've done, even if you decide the next second that you want to keep it. Concentrate your revisions on these areas. When you read through the story and don't find anything that hangs you up, you've probably created a story to the best of your abilities. Never be afraid of sending out a finished story. Never fear rejection. They are both part of the learning process. 2) Prepare your manuscript as professionally as possible.

Getting Published with the ANZJFT A range of needs, a range of articles
and a range of authors.
The ANZJFT is a community of therapists. We wish the articles to reflect the range of needs of people in our community. Articles may be short notes from your practise that reflect an issue that you have been wrestling with. It may not be academic but might be of interest. Your practise will develop as you write. As the ideas develop so will your practise. It is 90% perspiration/ hard work and 10% (or less less) talent. Create an exception to the rule in your life as a therapist or family centred practioner and expand yourself as you write about what you do. Create a new story about yourself.and what you can do. There are many good ideas out in the field that never get written up because the author never believed they could do it. It is a shame because we all lose out. Start now and see the results grow

How to Get Your Book Published
A Good Idea is Not Good Enough
If you think having a good idea will attract a publisher who will pay you to develop the idea into a book - think again. First you have to write the book, then you can think about getting it published. Only best selling authors can sell a book they have not written yet. But then again, every best selling author started with a good idea. The secret, however, is not so much the idea, but the tenacity and dedication with which you pursue your desire to be published. An average idea well executed, will beat an abandoned or unfinished good idea every time. Attracting Publishers "There are no rules. There is only what is possible."

The following are just a few opinionated do's and don't of dealing with publishers and writing contests.
Avoid publishers who charge you, whether it be reading fees or any other reason, to publish your writing. A reputable or successful publication makes it monies from selling copies of its product or in some markets by advertising not from its writers and contributors. Especially avoid anthologies (primarily poetry anthologies) that require the purchase of their book in order to be published. One reason is stated above. But the other reason is that if they require you to buy a copy, it's not because the publication is wildly successful or an elite market. Actually they do this because this is their main means of distribution and almost sole source of sales. Don't ever believe that because a submission was rejected it is totally unpublishable. They are many other reasons for a rejection letter other than "it sucked." Most publications have certain guidelines, stated or unstated, as to the exact type, content, and style of work they will accept which also affect such decisions. Send all your submissions in proper, typed prose or poetry manuscript form with a cover or query letter. If you don't know the form or if in doubt go to the library and look it up. And find out the editor's name so you may address directly to that person and not just put "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Editor." Always a plus in an editor's book.

20 VALUABLE TIPS TO GETTING PUBLISHED James Russell Publishing www.powernet.net/~scrnplay Despite the fact there are many books for authors on how to submit manuscripts to publishers and agents, a condensed primer of good advice is needed. Here are some valuable tips to help you get your book published.
  • You must have a "completed" manuscript ready for publication. If all you have is a great idea for a book and no product to sell you are wasting time and effort. Few publishers will accept such submissions from unknown writers. Best advice? Write the book then submit the manuscript to publishers and agents. Send the manuscript in separate unbound sheets, unless otherwise instructed. However, if you are an experienced writer, you may submit a book "proposal." Read books similar to what you plan to write so you have an idea of how the writer communicated the subject matter. You could likely do better. That's what you'll have to do in order to compete with other books much like yours in the marketplace! Read about the publishing industry.

Some Advice about Getting Published from Natural Bridge contributors
    Dan Pope
has published short stories in McSweeney's, The Gettysburg Review, The Iowa Review, North Dakota Quarterly, Shenandoah, Portland Review, and Natural Bridge ("Leave" in no. 3, "My Brother's Apartment" in no. 6, and "House on Goose Pond" in no. 8). A lot of young writers send their stuff out before they're ready, before the particular piece is ready. That makes for a flurry of trips to the post office and a flurry of rejections. Instead, try working on a particular storyyour best oneuntil it's perfect. Go over it again and again, no matter how long it takes. Don't rush it into the mail. (I like to finish a story, then let it sit for a while.
When I come back to it, some weeks later, I usually learn that it wasn't finished after all, that there's a lot more work to do.)
One disadvantage about participating in an MFA program is that the atmosphere can foster competitiveness. Try the opposite approach. Form a group with some writer-friends. Let each other know about publishing opportunitiesmagazines calling for submissions, contest deadlines, new journals, friends of friends who know someone somewhere, anything. Compare notes about which editors seem to be receptive to what types of writing. If you establish a cordial relationship with an editor, then recommend the work of one of your friends. Celebrate when one of the group gets a story accepted by drinking alcoholic beverages at the nearest tavern. Be generous. You will feel happier about yourself and the world at large.

Agent's Advice: Getting Published The problem with game development as a business is that too many people want to do it. Game development is just like any other entertainment business, such as movies, sports, and music; hordes of hopefuls are always trying to break-into show business, get drafted into professional sports, or get signed to recording contracts. "Wannabe" game developers are no different. As a group, they all love games, some have genuine talent, and most eventually end up trying to talk to established publishers about funding or publishing their game. When they do try talking to publishers, they get referred to someone in the product development (PD) department, or to a division within product development which is sometimes called acquisitions, licensing, A&R (Artists and Repertoire, a music industry term), or inventor relations. For many "wannabe" game developers, talking to product development is an unexpectedly difficult experience. Why? The truth is, PD professionals at publishing companies, many of whom are really great people, must make a hard decision. Either:
  • They are nice to everyone that contacts them, giving each and every person ample time to tell them about their game.

Writing Short Stories and Getting Them Published
    1. Consider undertaking a short writing course. This will help you with the technical aspects of writing. The thing editors love!
    2. Construct a plot. The plot draws the reader into the characters' lives and helps the reader understand the choices that the characters make. If an author writes, "The king died and then the queen died," there is no plot for a story. But by writing, "The king died and then the queen died of grief," the writer has provided a plot line for a story.
    3. Determine the point of view. Who is telling story? Is it in the first person, third person (narrator) or from an objective point of view? Does it change throughout the story?
    4. Create your characters. Be alert to your characters in the same way you are when you meet someone. Give careful consideration to their actions, what they say and how they say it, how they relate to other characters and how other characters respond to them.
