FROM YUCA TO HIGH-TECH
and the struggle in between
The human saga of Puerto Rico's economic development during the last millennium, from 1000-2000. The Taino Civilization Begins To Flourish 1000-1500 One thousand years ago along the coast of what we now call Puerto Rico, a woman rose eagerly from her hammock as the first rays of sunlight pierced the loosely slatted bamboo walls of her little round bohio. Her heart was light because today she would climb the hill above the growing village where she lived to the special pool in the stream where she always found the best flat rocks, the perfect materials she needed for the amulets she made for herself and for others to wear. One of the nitaínos, the village leaders who organized the harvesting of yuca and the planning of festivals, suggested she make some of her sought-after adornments, because a celebration was in the works.

News and Events Lyman Briggs Links During this recent spring break, 7 LBS students went to Puerto Rico with LBS advisor Emily Bridson. They visited the El Yunque Rainforest , the only tropical rainforest in the United States, and part of the Caribbean National Forest. The students performed community service and learned about the environment. This trip was tied in with Dr. Rik Scarce's LBS 492 class- "Creating Environmental Change" that is being taught this semester. Dr. Scarce teamed up with Ms. Bridson to submit a grant proposal to Michigan Campus Compact (http://www.mcc.mna.msu.edu/). It was successfully funded with the idea that the LBS 492 class would provide the backbone to then go to Puerto Rico to begin being environmentally active. Tying academics in with community service falls under the category of service learning, which is proving to be a very valuable experience for students. The LBS students who traveled to Puerto Rico were: Lisa Dancey, Will Folland, Rebecca Kolar, Konrad Kulacki, Chris Trepanowski, Amy Wren, and David Zaks. Please join us April 16th at 7 p.m. when the group will be presenting on their trip. The goal of the presentation is to talk about what was learned and to invite other individuals to become active and involved in making a change in the world.

P To intervene was a "humanitarian" imperative. One Senator declared: "We intervene not for conquest, not for aggrandizement…we intervene for humanity’s sake…to aid a people who have suffered every form of tyranny and who have made desperate struggle to be free". Sounds familiar? Here is what Henry Cabot Lodge had to say about Spain: it was "three hundred years behind all the rest of the world…What seems to us brutal treachery seems to them all right". "I would like to see Spain…swept from the face of the earth", said suffragist leader Elizabeth Cady Stanton—the Stacy Sullivan of her day. Hating the Spanish was even more fun than hating the Serbs. Catholic and obviously in decline, they were ideal material on which Americans could etch their lurid fantasies. Though Americans fought poorly, they were fortunate that the Spanish performed even worse. The war was to have devastating consequences. Spain went from revolution to dictatorship to civil war. The Franco era brought a measure of stability but it also cut Spain off from the rest of Europe. Today the Spanish are once more in a downward spiral . For its part, America acquired colonies that it had no idea what to do with. Neither statehood nor independence was thinkable to the U.S. So it came up with a compromise solution. So it came up with a compromise solution. These territories would be reduced to dependencies of one sort or another of the United States.

This book depicts the dramatic details of the author's escape from slavery and brutality in the hills of Puerto Rico in 1947. Refusing to work all her life on the farm, under rules of drunken parents who often beat her without explanation, she ran away at age twelve. By perseverance and her ability to work, she made a better life for herself. Some years later, she went back to the old farm and rescued her sisters and brothers from their enslavement.

91. Puerto Rican Culture And History
Your complete guide to puerto Rican history and culture

    "Tal es, patria, tu sino,
    libertad conquistar, ciencia y ventura,
sin dejar en las zarzas del camino
ni un jirón de tu blanca vestidura"
      Puerto Rico (fragmento)
" El día que muera la puertorriqueñidad se apagará para siempre una llama que llevan en el corazón todos los puertorriqueños..."
      Dancing the Plena
Puerto Rico today is caught between two diverse cultures and is constantly under scrutiny and judgement of visitors with only a scant understanding of the island and its people. Outsiders and especially mainland Americans will increasingly be called upon to understand Puerto Rico and her unique culture. Apart from the very obvious difference in the language, many of these cultural differences are harder to specify and quantify than are the formal elements in common just mentioned. At social and cultural levels profound differences do exist between people of different backgrounds. The was the first infuence in Puerto Rican culture but it was Spanish culture which most greatly infuenced the island's history until the beggining of this century. When the Spanish forced the Tainos into slavery, virtually the entire indigenous population was decimated, except for a few Amerindians who escaped into the remote mountains. Eventually they intermarried with the poor Spanish farmers and became known as . Because of industrialization and migration to the cities few real remain. Puerto Rico also has a rich African culture dating from the importation of Africans as slaves by the Spaniards in past centuries. The people of Puerto Rico represent a mixture of races, cultures, languages and religions. They draw their unique heritage from the Tainos, from Spanish loyalists who sought refuge here, from the African slaves and from other Caribbean islanders who came to the island in search of jobs. The Spanish they speak is a mix too, different somewhat from Castillian Spanish, with many words borrowed from the pre-Colombian Amerindian tongue right up to modern-day English.American culture has had a progressive effect upon Puerto Rican culture since 1898 but especially so after the 40's. Some Puerto Ricans are not happy with the result of that influence; others welcome it.

Country Info Puerto Rico Introduction Puerto Rico General Data Puerto Rico Maps Puerto Rico Culture ... Puerto Rico Time and Date Puerto Rico Land Back to Top Puerto Rico's mountainous backbone is the easternmost extension of a tightly folded and faulted ridge that extends from the Central American mainland across the northern Caribbean to the Lesser Antilles. While the highest point on the island reaches only about 4,389 feet (1,338 metres) at Mount Punta, there is a marine trough north of San Juan that plunges to more than 30,000 feet (9,144 metres) below sea level, one of the lowest ocean depths. The great difference in crustal elevations illustrates the strong tectonic forces that have operated in geologic history to create these features. Puerto Rico still occasionally suffers from earthquakes, reflecting the ongoing geologic processes. Rectangularly shaped, the island measures, at most, only about 111 miles from east to west and a mere 40 miles from north to south. Two important islands off the east coast, Vieques and Culebra, are also parts of Puerto Rico, as is the island of Mona to the west.
