Spelling Reform Hits the Newsstand Dateline: 30 August 1999 (Updated: 11 August 2000) G erman spelling reform ( Rechtschreibreform ) was a hot topic even before its official adoption by all the German-speaking countries on August 1, 1998. At that time, the new rules applied to all government agencies and schools. (A transitional period will allow the old and new spellings to coexist until the end of July 2005, after which only the new spelling rules will be valid.) We first wrote about the reforms in an earlier article entitled " Spelling Reform: Double-S Words With their readers less than enthusiastic about the revised rules, the German media were not quick to jump on the new spelling bandwagon. Only now, a full year after die neue Rechtschreibung went into effect for educators and government officials, have Germany's newspapers and magazines begun to print their articles using the new rules. But a look at recent editions of the news magazine

Accents
It is essential to put accents in their proper places - an incorrect or missing accent is a spelling mistake just as an incorrect or missing letter would be. Acronymes et sigles français - French Acronyms and Abbreviations
VTT, TGV, DEUG... Feel like you're lost in alphabet soup? Acronyms abound in the French language, especially in newspapers, on the news, and in political discussions. You might not be able to learn every French acronym and abbreviation, but you can get a good head start by memorizing this list of the most common ones. Apocopes / Abbreviations
It is very common in French for long words to be abbreviated by dropping one or more syllables at the end, and, in some instances, then adding an -o, such as dico, ordi, and métro. There are some apocopes which are so old that they are normal register, but most are informal or familiar, so use them with caution.

    Written Spanish #1: Punctuate It!
Spanish punctuation is so much like English's that some textbooks and reference books don't even discuss it. But there are a few significant differences. The following chart shows the Spanish punctuation marks and their names. Marks used differently than in English are linked to an explanation below.
punto o punto final period coma comma dos puntos colon punto y coma semicolon raya dash hyphen
comillas quotation marks comillas simples single quotation marks question marks exclamation marks parentheses brackets corchetes braces, curly brackets asterisco asterisk puntos suspensivos ellipses . (punto o punto final) In regular text, the period is used essentially the same as in English. However, in numerals a comma is often used instead of a period and vice versa. In U.S. and Mexican Spanish, however, the same pattern as English is often followed.
