The angle of inclination of the triangular faces is about 51.5 degrees. The square of its height equals the area of each triangular face, as determined by Herodotus in 450 B. C. The base of the pyramid covers about 13 acres. The other two pyramids in the famous trio are Khafre, 704 feet (214.5 meters) square, 471 feet (143.5 meters) high, with a face inclination of 53.2 degrees, and Menkaure, 345.5 feet (110 meters) square, 216 feet (68.8 meters) high, with a face inclination of 51.3 degrees (or possibly 330ft wide and 206 ft high (105m x 65.5m)).

Discussion Pyramide du Louvre Commentary "Of all the Grands Projets in Paris, none created such a stir as the Pei Pyramids in the courtyard of the famous Louvre Museum. Spectacular in concept and form, they provide a startling reminder of the audacious ability of modern architects to invigorate and re-circulate traditional architectural forms...The main Pyramid is basically a complex inter-linked steel structure sheathed in reflective glass. In fact it is an entrance doorway providing a long-overdue entrance portico to the main galleries of the Louvre. As one descends into the interior entrance foyer, the dramatic nature of the intervention becomes apparent. The main Pyramid, which certainly disturbs the balance of the old Louvre courtyard, is countered by two smaller pyramids, which provide further light and ventilation to the subterranean spaces." Details Address: Cour Napoleon, 75001 Paris, France.

The Egyptian pyramids were funerary monuments built for the pharaohs and their closest relatives. Most date from the Old Kingdom (c.2686-2181 BC) and are found on the west bank of the Nile, in a region approximately 100 km long and situated south of the delta, between Hawara and Abu Ruwaysh. Pyramids developed from the "mastaba", a low, rectangular stone structure erected over a tomb. HOW TO NAVIGATE:

    Pyramids of Ancient Egypt
The rich and famous of Egypt were buried in a building known as a Mastabas. A Mastabas was a flat roofed building with sloping sides. It had a shaft in the middle of the building down to another chamber where the body and goods of the deceased would be housed. Djoser was the first pharaoh to build a pyramid for his burial place. Originally Inhopet, the designer, built a large Mastabas for Djoser. On the Mastabas he then constructed a four step pyramid. Later it was expanded again to a six step pyramid which still can be seen today. The step pyramid is rectangular with six levels over 195 feet in height. He built the pyramid about 25 miles south of current day Cairo at a complex know as Saqqara. In the Forth Dynasty the pyramid changed to the smooth pyramids of which the Cheops and is the most famous near Cairo. The Cheops pyramid measures 479 feet high. It has 2,300,000 stones each weighing an average of 2.5 tons.

Egyptian art and architecture are a very firm reflection of the culture from which they were produced. The power of the pharaoh and his position in society is clearly reflected in the large project which they were able to complete. The pharaoh was the center of the Egyptian society. The Pyramids are one of the most impressive monuments of the ancient world, and you can still visit them today. The Pyramids were built as tombs for the Pharaohs, the rulers of Egypt. They were all built during the Old Kingdom , so that the greatest remains of Ancient Egypt are also some of the earliest to have been built! The first Pharaohs built simpler tombs, called mastabas. These mastabas were square buildings with a room inside for the coffin and the mummy and some things to take with you to the afterlife. Then the Egyptian pharaohs began to build mounds of earth on top of their mastabas, to make them grander. Ordinary princes and other aristocrats went on being buried in mastabas. The Step Pyramid is one of the first of these new fancy tombs. Doesn't it look a lot like a

The Egyptians built different kinds of buildings at different times, just like any other group of people. In the beginning, they built mainly mastabas, a kind of tomb with a flat roof like a house. Then throughout most of the Old Kingdom , the Egyptians built the pyramid tombs which are now so famous. In the Middle Kingdom , the mastaba tomb came back again, although in a more elaborate form for the Pharaohs. No more pyramids were built. Then in the New Kingdom there was a lot of building that was not tombs: temples for the gods especially, but also palaces for the Pharaohs. Egypt: Art and Architecture
    Architecture
The great architectural achievements of the past are built of stone. Stone quarries supplied the large blocks of granite, limestone, and sandstone that were used for building temples and tombs. Architects planned carefully as building was done without mortar, so the stones had to fit precisely together. Only pillars were used to sustain short stone supports. At the temple of Karnak, a ramp of adobe brick can be seen leading to the top of the temple wall. Such ramps were used to allow workmen to carry stones to the top of structure and allow artists to decorate the tops of walls and pillars. Pillars were built in the same way. As height was added, the ground was raised. When the top of the pillar was completed, the artists would decorate from the top down, removing ramp sand as they went along. As soon as a pharaoh was named, construction on his tomb was begun. Tomb building continued throughout his life and stopped only on the day on which he died. As a result, some tombs are very large and finely decorated, while other tombs, like that of King Tutankhamun, are small because he ruled as a pharaoh for such a short time. The architecture was based upon perpendicular structures and inclined planes since there was no structural assistance except the strength and balance of the structure itself. For this reason, the square and the plumb-line were very important tools.
