Architecture in Puebla
A simple definition of architecture, like art, is elusive (Domer, 1999). Vitruvius, a Roman engineer and architect, gave a definition of architecture that is both brief and clear. “To be architecture,” he said, “it must meet simultaneously the needs of firmness, commodity, and delight.” In other words, the building must stand up materially against the forces of nature; they must provide shelter, be useful, and work well; and they must be artful and attractive to the eye. Although all architecture is building, not all building is architecture. In Puebla and Cholula, we examined three main types of building: pyramids, churches, and dwellings. We will examine how each of these need the defined criterai for architecture.
The Pyramids
Not only are the pyramids of Cholula an interesting historical site, but they are also fine examples of architecture too. By the traditional definition of architecture, the pyramids fulfill all the categories. First of all, buildings must stand up to the forces of nature. The pyramids have been around since 200 BCE.

a classic and a good reference
This book is rated the classic reference on Ancient Egyptian building techniques. It covers all aspects of construction from mathematical procedures to the ways the Ancient Egyptians drilled granite and other hard stones. Various buildings and pyramids are picked out as examples for diverse techniques as well as for the purpose of providing insight into how they were built. Although getting out of date with more information having been gathered during the past 60-odd years, it is well worth reading and having as a handy reference.
These men are not pompous...okay maybe a little.

http://emuseum.mnsu.edu/prehistory/egypt/architecture/gizapyramids.html
The Pyramids of Giza The pyramids of Giza, are perhaps the only true rival to the Great Sphinx , when one thinks about Ancient Egypt and it's architecture. The valley of Giza with it's wonderful monuments, is truly a marvel of architectural prowess. The three Pyramids, consist of The Great Pyramid of Khufu , The Pyramid of Kafhre and The Pyramid of Menkaura. Each Pyramid is a tomb to a different King of Egypt. All three pyramids were built during the Third and Fourth Dynasty, and were monumental undertakings of the king and the kings sons. The Pyramid of Khufu has a base which covers roughly a nine acre area (roughly 392,040 square feet). The pyramid of Menkaura, unlike the other pyramids, had one tier of it's base covered in granite. The pyramid of Khafre, had a two tier base encased in granite. Unfortunately like many of the great Kings of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, the Pyramid of Menkaura, Khufu, and Kafhre were not finished in the time of the end of the Kings reign. In the case of Menkaura, the king died before it's construction was completed. The monuments of Giza and the entire Giza valley stand as a marvelous reminder of the skill executed in the creation of the pyramids, and are truly fabulous to see.

The most remarkable examples of Mayan architecture
The author and editor Henri Stierlin has based his presentation of these most remarkable examples of Mayan architecture on the latest findings from excavations in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize. Cities have been rediscovered in the depths of the rain forest, along with soaring pyramids, mysterious tombs, palaces with frescoes and steles.
Particularly intriguing is the fact that, although this very advanced civilisation evolved completely separately from that of the "Old World", the architectural parallels are astonishing. Only very recently has it been possible to decipher Mayan hieroglyphics to any great extent.
This new research is used to full advantage by this volume as a key to unlock the mystery of Mayan architecture.

Building Materials Community Geometry Bridge Builder Career Connections ... More Math Concepts The great thing about geometry is that it is all around us! And the architecture of buildings and objects provides a perfect setting for students to look at and find shapes and geometric properties. It is wonderful to help students to see the mathematics in the shapes and designs of the world around them. You might use some or all of these activities: Create a geometry slide show:
Take slides of architectural structures and objects that represent different figures and types of geometry and mathematics. This can include slides from other places but should also include slides of buildings or objects that the students will easily recognize as being in their school and community. You can use these slides at the beginning of the geometry unit when you are learning about or reviewing names of different object and their properties. Slides work well for this activity because they allow everyone to see the same picture at the same time and to talk about the geometry in that picture.

Maya Architecture The Mayan civilization had elaborate buildings. These buildings were not made of stone or wood. They were built with concrete! Concrete is an important building material still used today. The Mayans built pyramids as monuments to their gods and leaders. Some of the pyramids were 200 feet high. The tops of the Mayan pyramids are not pointed like the Egyptian pyramids. Instead they are flat. The rulers and leaders would climb the pyramids and sit upon the flat tops. Mayans also built palaces for the rulers. The pyramids and palaces were often arranged around a central court or garden.
