63. Snakes - Boa Constrictors, Royal (ball) Pythons & Corn Snakes
A boa constrictor? A Royal (ball) python? Corn snakes? There are many species tochoose from and many varieties in each species. 3. Where am I going to put it?
http://www.ericas-designs.com/snakes/
Zeppelin's Lair Orion's Home Cleopatra's Page Lennon There are a lot of people who like and dislike snakes. I just so happen to be a woman who likes snakes. I just thought here I'd provide you with some information about snakes and places to look for more information. One important thing people have to do who *think* they may want to own a snake is research! Very important!! How do you take care of snakes?
You have to take a lot of things into consideration:
1. How long do you want to own one? Snakes have a longer life span than your average dog or cat. In fact some have lived up to 40 yrs. So you are talking about a commitment for a long time. 2. What kind of snake do I want? A boa constrictor? A Royal (ball) python? Corn snakes? There are many species to choose from and many varieties in each species. 3. Where am I going to put it? Do you have room for a 10-15 ft boa constrictor or are you better off having a 5ft ball python or a 4ft corn snake? 4. Important! Why do you want a snake?

WELCOME TO THE REPTILE HOUSE
Baby is the largest snake in the Zoo's Reptile House, but she is only one snake in a vast and fascinating collection of reptiles. Here is a brief glimpse at some of the other interesting serpents who live in the Reptile House.
The Other Pythons
The Los Angeles Zoo is fortunate enough to have two rare Boelen's pythons. The snakes are black with yellow bellies and stripes of yellow coming up the sides. The Zoo's pair of Boelen's pythons were hand raised. The snakes, native to the mountains of central New Guinea, are extremely rare in zoos. The smallest pythons at the Zoo are children's pythons(above left) and ball pythons(above right). Both snakes average about three feet in length. The ball python is unique because when it is threatened, it rolls itself into a ball with its head, the most vulnerable spot, protected inside its coils.
Photo by Sy Oskeroff The blood python is so named because it is usually a red color, however in the Zoo's Reptile House, we have a young blood python whose scales are shades of yellow. As it grows older it will turn red.
The Venomous Snakes
Two new Sudanese red spitting cobras were added to the Zoo's collection recently. These beautiful snakes are a rich, burgundy color down their entire length of about five feet. Their specially adapted fangs allow them to spit venom at their prey, sometimes as far as 10 feet. When handling the snakes, keepers wear special safety masks with a plastic shield that covers their whole face.

Voorwoord

78. Snakes, Symbols And Companions
The Mayan tradition depicts the halo of the Moon as a coiled python.snakes are the earliest symbols of the Moon in this culture.
http://connectionsjournal.com/files/archives/highlights/zellsnake.html
Snakes, Symbols and Companions
by Zella Bardsley Few animals are regarded with more awe and reverence than the snake. Because they often nest underground, snakes have long been symbolic of the dead returning to the upper world. The act of shedding skin, of sliding out of the old and being reborn, is the transformative symbol of snake. Though the snake is often androgynous, embodying all possibilities, its strongest symbolism is that of the Great Mother, intuitive wisdom, feminine mysteries, the elementary enigma of life seen wherever apparent opposites are conjoined. Medusa is associated with snake energy. She is the divine primordial Goddess who created/birthed, amidst her coiling scales, the planets, stars, the cosmos. Medusa was originally described as a beautiful Maiden Goddess, with the lovely serpentine hair of wisdom and magic. Patriarchy transformed her to a gorgon. The Greek Athena was generally depicted with snakes surrounding her, an imagery relating her deep into antiquity to the great cosmic Snake Mother. Her later attribute as Goddess of war indicates an older aspect of protectress. The snake was an important Celtic symbol, again emblematic of the Great Mother Brigit. When Ireland fell to Christianity, the mythology appeared of Saint Patrick driving out the snakes. The "snakes" driven out were the Priestesses of the Goddess, the Druids, and others following the old traditions – another reason not to drink green beer this March.

Elsewhere on the Web Handling Large Constrictors by Lenny Flank American Federation of Herpetoculturalists on Large Constrictor Ownership The constricting snakes, commonly referred to as "boids" (members of the the taxonomic family Boidae) are a diverse group of snakes. There are several varieties kept as pets; some are okay for beginners and some definitely are not. These snakes share a common trait of killing their prey by suffocation, but there are significant differences in habitat, natural history and care requirements. While the terms boa and python often bring to mind large killer snakes, this is not the whole picture. While there are large and potentially dangerous snakes in this group (more on this later), smaller docile members of the family can actually make quite engaging pets. Allowing for differences between individuals, some are quite curious, active and easily tamed.
