Photo courtesy of Tom Weeks. The State of Qatar is a small, oil-rich peninsula projecting northward from the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula into the Arabian Gulf. With substantial oil and natural gas reserves, Qatar is one of the wealthiest states in the region and has developed high quality health care and education systems. The capital city of Doha lies on the east coast of the peninsula and features a wide mixture of modern and traditional Arabic architecture. Almost 90 percent of Qatar's population lives in Doha and its surrounding suburbs. The Wahhabi sect of Sunni Islam is the predominant religion. Photo courtesy of Tom Weeks. Only 20 percent of the nation's population is native to Qatar, as a large number of expatriates from India, Pakistan, Iran, North Africa, and various Western nations live and work in the country. Qatar's official language is Arabic, although Urdu and English are widely spoken, especially among the foreign community. Education in Qatar is free from the primary to the university level.

Population: Capital City: Doha Language: Arabic Religion: Islam Government: Emirate Climate: The best time to visit is November to late February to early March. During these times you are most likely to enjoy bearable temperatures with a minimum of wind. Summer lasts from May to September and temperatures at that time generally average 35C (95F), although it can get up to 50C (122F). The 90% humidity adds to the discomfort. The winter months (December- February) are much milder with pleasant, cool evenings throughout the year, but especially in spring, Qatar is subject to sandstorms that hit the country in December and January, causing many of the roads to close. Location: The Qatar peninsula juts northward into the Persian Gulf from the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Qatar is a flat country just a bit smaller than the US state of Connecticut. Literacy Rate: Visas: Everyone except Britons and nationals of other Gulf States needs a visa to enter Qatar. Embassies and large hotels within the country can sponsor visas. Israel passport holders are not allowed in Qatar. Culture: Transportation: Gulf Air, Royal Jordanian, Qatar Airways, Emirates Airways and British Airways serve Doha International Airport (DOH). If you fly either Gulf Air or Qatar Airways you can get to Doha from anywhere in the Gulf, most of Asia, as well as from New York and a number of cities in India and Pakistan. The only European cities served are Athens and London. Qatar is small. Qatar does not have a bus or service-taxi system, so regular taxis and rented cars are your only options for getting to and from the airport and around the country. You can rent a car on most foreign licenses, and while driving can be a little hairy, you'll have no problem getting fuel.

In the West, they might be seen as the ultimate "power couple." On one side is the iconoclastic young emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who is determined to usher his tiny, gas-rich Persian Gulf state into the 21st century. TWO WORLDS, ONE CULTURE: A Qatari family at a counter in the capital, Doha, hints at rising blend of tradition and modernity in the tiny Gulf state.
(KAMRAN JEBREILI/AP) He wants Qatar well-educated, to play a global role far larger than its size dictates. Already he has shaken up staid and aging Gulf leaders by embracing a free press and elections. But on the other side of this powerful team is Qatar's "first lady," Sheikha Mouza al-Misnad, who is shaking up long-held attitudes herself. That's a departure from the norm among wives in some more conservative Gulf states: keeping behind a veil and hidden out of sight. When she made an official trip to the United States to visit Harvard and other top colleges a year ago - unattended by her husband, confidently meeting such heavyweights as former Secretary of State James Baker - Sheikha Mouza was breaking new ground.

Quarrel in Arabia affects Iraq attack
Saudis miffed at Qatar for its support of U.S. military buildup.
It appears Saudi Arabia and Qatar are headed for a quarrel about the war on terror that could affect U.S. forces deployed in Qatar, says Stratfor, the global intelligence company. Doha's willingness to support the U.S. military's buildup for a war with Iraq is making rulers in Riyadh irate, a feeling the Al Jazeera TV network has only compounded by airing criticisms of the Saudi regime.
Saudi daily al Watan called Qatar's foreign minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al Thani, a "dwarf" today after he met with his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres in Paris. The insult is just the latest in a string of sour notes sounded between Riyadh and Doha.
Layers of resentment are contributing to the tensions between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. At the surface, Riyadh is genuinely angry about the negative press coverage by Doha-based Al Jazeera, a satellite TV network that broadcasts relatively uncensored material throughout the Arab world. Beneath this outrage over Qatari press freedoms is the fear that Qatari support for a U.S. military campaign against Iraq could result in Washington's advancing its war plans.
Tensions between the two Gulf neighbors could create an unstable environment for U.S. troops deployed in the region in the short- to mid-term. In a worst-case scenario, Saudi Arabia might pressure Qatar to oust the U.S. forces, or it might stir dissidents inside its tiny neighbor to try to destabilize the Doha regime or even launch assaults against American military personnel.

The two prime requirements for building a golf course in the middle of several thousand square miles of extremely hot and arid desert are water and money. And to create a golf course to the high standard needed to host a PGA European tour event requires extremely large amounts of both.
The country of Qatar sits on top of the third richest natural gas deposits in the world, with several trillion barrels of oil also lying deep below the desert sands just waiting to be pumped to the surface. All of which means that raising the 40 million plus riyals required to build the golf course to the very highest specifications wasn't really a major financial problem. Doha Golf Club Feature Article About the accommodation?
    How do you get there?

However, you might be excused for thinking that providing the 3,000 gallons of fresh water per minute needed to keep the grass lush and green in mid summer temperatures that usually top the 100 degrees mark might have proved to be a little more tricky. The good news is that Qatar is situated on the shores of the Bay of Doha - from which the golf club takes its name - and there is water for almost as far as the eye can see. The bad news is that it's seawater. Fortunately, even this didn't prove to be a major obstacle for a country already highly skilled and experienced in water destination technology.
