REDLINE EXPRESS July 1999 Page 6 Board Candidate Biographies by the candidates Sam Vickery for board of directors My focus as a board member would be to find and implement new ways to build our membership, especially new drivers and workers. There are a lot of people out there that would Dove to get involved in our club but don't know what we're about or what we do exactly. I'm motivated to find ways to build our membership through creative thinking and hard work. This club belongs to all of us. We get out of it what we put into it. I'm ready to step forward and push for those issues that make it fun to be involved with and to help build and strengthen our organization. As a member of your board I'll be committed to working on and building the club membership and club spirit! Sean Gould, for board of directors Member #233021, member since 04/94, National Competition License/ Crew License. History: In college at Virginia Tech, I was on the Formula SAE team. We built and raced 5 formula cars. In '91 we won the National Formula SAE competition. I was first exposed to SCCA via auto crossing in A-Mod with the VT cars. In my last year at VT, I was the Formula SAE Team Manager. In '93 I moved to Colorado with the hopes of racing Formula Fords. I met Jim Christian at a general meeting and under his tutelage I learned the ins and outs of SCCA Club Racing. I crowed for him for the next three years. Eventually getting my License in a JCR Club Ford. When Spec RXTs started, I was there. I built one of the first S7s and won the Regional Championship last year. I was chosen (sentenced) by my competitors and the current board to fill the vacancy of the S7 Administrator.

Oldemar da Silva Ramos (BR)

Baron Johan Ronald Ramsay (FIN)
11 Aug 1903 - ?
This Finno-Swedish nobleman was interested in agriculture and after getting his Master's degree in agriculture and forestry in 1927 he started to take care of his mansion at Tali, north of Viipuri. (Now in Russia - the mansion became one of the most fierce battlefields in the Second World War). A good tennis player and fencer, Ramsey had also an interest in cars. He was married in 1928 and the next year the young couple visited the USA where they were introduced to Henry Ford who gave them an inside view of the car industry and also donated a car to them. As a completely unknown, Ramsey took a sensational second position at the 1931 Swedish GP in a Chrysler Imperial. Ramsey proved to be a good racing driver but his career was quite short as he understood that serious racing demanded a real racing car, a step he refrained from taking as he was driving just for fun.

This site has everything a biking fan could want. Rating : 9/10 McLaren
www.mclaren.co.uk No other constructor has dominated Formula in the way that McLaren has over the last few years. On this site, though, you will find precious little about the cars that have made them so successful. Instead the site concentrates on giving a run-down of the races themselves and of how the previews went from the point of view of the drivers and the infamous Ron Dennis. There are plenty of photos and the results from the last two seasons, and biographies of the drivers. A slickly designed site, but one which could do with a little more content to bring it up to scratch.

THE ULTIMATE RACER

By Karl Ludvigsen.
Published by Haynes.
by Mark Glendenning,
Australia
Karl Ludvigsen's string of driver biographies shouldn't need much of an introduction. All have enjoyed a relatively high profile, both in the Atlas F1 forums and elsewhere, and one, 'Juan Manuel Fangio: Motor Racing's Grand Master', has featured in this space previously. This study of the career of Dan Gurney is the fourth in a series that, along with Fangio, has also featured Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, and was recently expanded to include Alberto Ascari. Dan Gurney is a particularly welcome subject for such a book, partly because his impact upon the sport is possibly under-appreciated amongst Formula One's general fan base. Gurney is respected almost to the point of reverence by those sensitive to motor racing's history, but for some reason he seems to have made less of an impression amongst followers of the modern version of the sport. I did a quick poll amongst some friends who are casual Formula One fans. All knew Moss and Fangio, and Stewart's consistent profile within the sport through the years has cemented his fame amongst the newer generation, but quite a few people either knew Gurney only by name, or did not know of him at all. If this book goes even a small way toward changing this, then that alone will prove its worth. Not that much proof of the value of this book is really necessary, because by and large Ludvigsen has done an admirable job. 'The Ultimate Racer' follows Gurney's full professional career. Relatively little space is allocated to the early years of Gurney's life, and virtually none is devoted to his life after racing. But for brief excursions back and forwards through time, the book traces a chronological path through the years that Gurney spent in the cockpits of sports cars, Formula One cars, Indy cars, stock cars, and pretty much anything else that he came across.

The late sixties revolutionised the world in many ways and its ideals were even reflected in Grand Prix racing. The arrival of the Cosworth DFV at the time of the Paris student revolts marked F1's own emancipation as youthful, exhuberant underdog garagistes finally found a powerhorse to match their kit-car machines, enabling them to enjoy unparalleled freedom. Then, in that hippie summer of '69, came three more technical innovations, of which one was to change the face of F1 and two went belly-up within one season. The one least likely to succeed, if only judging by the flimsy and uncharismatic looks of those

A championship more dramatic than a Hollywood script, with a season finale that was downright unbelievable, the 2001 BTCC series sparkled with fierce rivalry, intense racing, bumper-to-bumper battles and more than a few off-track controversies!
It was a year in which arch-rivals and Vauxhall team-mates Jason Plato and Yvan Muller headed into the final race of the year, each with a chance of snatching the title from the other! After a thrilling and dramatic showdown at a rain-soaked Brands Hatch, it was Plato who emerged victorious and became the first British driver to capture the BTCC crown since John Cleland in 1995.
