The History of Gold's Gym Fayette County
In 1986 and again in 1988, health clubs opened and closed in Peachtree City taking with them thousands of dollars of money from local residents who had paid for one and two-year memberships in advance. Emotions and public outrage ran high. Local newspapers were filled with stories about the demise of these health clubs and the money it cost local residents. It was against this backdrop that J.D. and Varner Holmes opened a new health club in 1989 at the eastern edge of Peachtree City. At the time, Club Peachtree Fitness Center as it was called, was the only fitness center in the Peachtree City area. To encourage people to join, the Holmeses had to come up with a risk-free membership agreement. So they introduced the first pay-by-the-month health club memberships in Fayette County. Furthermore, they did not allow anyone to pay in advance for memberships. Club Peachtree was an instant success.

Mountaineering - Competition Climbing Climbing has obviously had a long history. Nevertheless, competition climbing only started in the 1960s with speed events in the former USSR, continuing in the 1980s with difficulty events in other parts of Europe, and in 1989 with the first ever climbing world cup. Today, climbing competitions include three different disciplines: Bouldering - where athletes conquer the greatest number of obstacles without rope, Difficulty - athletes aim to climb highest on the wall, and finally Speed - the fastest climbers are the winners. 52 countries organize regular climbing competitions on climbing walls specially erected in large arenas with thousands of spectators. The young sport has not only added to the popularity of climbing walls everywhere, it has greatly improved rock climbing standards, too.
The sports of The World Games are spectacular!

The whoosh of the heavy doors of the Olympic Club quickly seals out the San Francisco street clamor. The quiet lobby, so noise-free you can hear a glove plop on the floor, signals it's Friday night, a time when most members of the downtown athletic club have better things to do than work out. But not everyone.
In a corner of the top floor, four hale guys are swatting a two-inch-diameter blue ball as if it were a fly buzzing around their beer.
The action is fast and furious. The foursome, who range in age from 24 to 45, burst around the 20- by 40-foot court-forward, backward, laterally, occasionally diving headlong for the ball, which ricochets off the four walls at a blistering 70 miles per.
More tactical than racquetball, which is played on the same courts, faster than tennis, and demanding more precision and stamina than any racquet sport, handball is the ultimate court game. Many who try it just once throw their bruised hands up in frustration, but most who stick with it a while become permanent converts. And it burns fat tissue better than a spa weekend in the second ring of hell.

The Spring Valley Lake project was built upon Kalin Ranch, a former cattle ranch that was being utilized for alfalfa farming and lay serene and quiet on both sides of the Mojave River. The whole area was at one time called Rancho Verde Co., which was purchased in 1877. Lake construction began in June 1969, and was officially filled and completed in February 1970. The lake is one mile long and reaches a depth of 22 feet. Portions of the Sage Hen Ranch were also included in the Spring Valley Lake project. Sage Hen Ranch (which now overlooks the 18 th green and 10 th fairway of the country club) was a guest ranch established in 1936 that boasted such guests as Mary Aster and Betty Davis, who both made films there. It is now part of Spring Valley Lake community.

History of Squash
130 years of squash

Squash was invented in Harrow school around 1830, when the pupils discovered that a punctured Rackets ball, which "squashed" on impact with the wall, produced a game with a greater variety of shots and required much more effort on the part of the players, who could not simply wait for the ball to bounce back to them as with Rackets. The variant proved popular and in 1864 the first four Squash courts were constructed at the school and Squash was officially founded as a sport in its own right.
In those early days Squash, as with all other sports, was without any form of international standardisation and it was inevitable that slight variations in the way it was played, and the equipment used, would occur. Luckily only two main streams of activity followed, one in England with its 21 feet wide courts and "soft" ball and the other in North America, with its 18.5 feet wide courts and "hard" ball and with both courts having the same length of 32 feet the universality of Squash was not seriously challenged. We will look at these two branches separately and also at the way in which Squash spread to almost every nation in the world 130 years of squash - Early days in England EARLY DAYS IN ENGLAND
The first recorded reference to "Squash", other than in Harrow school, appeared in 1890 in the English book "The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes" written by the Duke of Beaufort. Eustace Miles, a world champion at both Tennis and Rackets, wrote the first book on Squash in 1901, stating that the sport was enjoyed by thousands of players in various parts of the world. By that time there were courts in schools and universities in England and some also in private houses. The first professional Squash Championship was held in 1920 in England, when C.R. Read (Queens Club) beat A.W.B. Johnson (RAC Club).

98. OFF THE WALL
THE history. IN THE 1880'S WHEN HANDBALL PLAY COMMENCED AT THE OLYMPICNORTH AMERICA'S RACQUETBALLWAS MODELED AFTER HANDBALL, SO THE RULE DIFFERENCES ARE MINOR
http://www.handballcity.com/off_the_wall.htm
OFF THE WALL BY BOB COOPER (MEN'S FITNESS JANUARY 2001) HANDBALL IS THE IDEAL INDOOR GAME TO KEEP YOU FIT, FAST AND FAT-FREE THE WHOOSH OF HEAVY DOORS OF THE OLYMPIC CLUB QUICKLY SEALS OUT THE SAN FRANCISCO STREET CLAMOR. IN A CORNER OF THE TOP FLOOR, FOUR HALE GUYS ARE SWATTING A TOW-INCH-DIAMETER BLUE BALL AS IF IT WERE A FLY BUZZING AROUND THEIR BEER. THE ACTION IS FAST AND FURIOUS. THE FOURSOME, WHO RANGE IN AGE FROM 24 TO 45, BURST AROUND THE 20-BY 40-FOOT COURTFORWARD, BACKWARD, LATERALLY, OCCASIONALLY DIVING HEADLONG FOR THE BALL, WHICH RICOCHETS OFF THE FOUR WALLS AT A BLISTERING 70 MILES PER. "HANDBALL HAS A LONG LEARNING CURVE," SAYS BERNIE SAMET, THE OLYMPIC'S HANDBALL AND SQUASH DIRECTOR, AS HE WATCHES EACH LUNGE WITH CLINICAL DETACHMENT. "LEARNING TO ANTICIPATE WHERE THE BALL WILL END UP ISN'T EASY. TIMING AND TECHNIQUE ARE EVERYTHING. BUT HANDBALL GETS IN YOUR BLOOD. THE GREAT THING ABOUT MY JOB IS THAT WHEN THREE PLAYERS NEED A FOURTH, I'M ALWAYS AROUND. THEY ASK ME, AND IT'S LIKE PUTTING HEROIN IN FRONT OF AN ADDICT."
