Baseball, softball and modern pentathlon have three months to save their sports from being dropped from the Olympics. Ballroom dancing, surfing and bowling can forget about trying to get into the Games. The International Olympic Committee's executive board, meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, discussed an internal report yesterday proposing the biggest shake-up in the sports program in the history of the Summer Games. The IOC program commission has recommended eliminating baseball, softball and modern pentathlon, as well as certain events in wrestling, equestrian, rowing, sailing, canoe-kayak and others. The report proposes adding golf and rugby - on the condition that the sports' top athletes take part.

Sports Beat Trying to define what is a sport
A sport or not a sport, that is the question. It's time to get down to the nitty, gritty and figure out what is considered a sport and what shouldn't be. What got me thinking about the topic was a recommendation last week by the International Olympic Committee's executive board to drop baseball, softball and modern pentathlon from the summer Olympic slate. The IOC is also looking to add golf, rugby and a Chinese martial art called wushu. The last Olympic sport that had full medal status removed was polo way back in 1936. A request to bring it back was rejected last week. The thought of giving other so-called sports Olympic status was also rejected. Among the sports turned down were ballroom dancing, surfing, bowling, billiards, squash, water skiing and racquetball. Let's look at some. Are they sports or aren't they? Ballroom dancing. It looks like fun but personally I have two left feet. I just don't see it as sport. How do you score it? Now maybe if the competitors started waltzing all at the same time and the last couple standing wins, I might consider it a sport. Surfing. Gnarly activity dude, but how much surfing actually takes place throughout the world? I mean can't you just see a kid from Findlay in the gold medal surfing match after his years of training, riding the waves on the reservoir.

Suggestions for using sports sign dictionaries
By using a visual dictionary to see the playing field and equipment used in a given sport, as well as reading the rules of the game, visualize what situations, spatial relations, and vocabulary might come up, involving both specialized and non-specialized vocabulary. Think of how you would sign these. As you learn each sports sign: understand what the term means conceptually (ask a friend, use an English dictionary), produce the sign from the picture in the sports sign dictionary, try to understand where the sign came from. Below are some categories that might help you in this last step. (For an explanation of the glossing system, see explanation of the glossing system. (1) initialized - defense: D-DEFEND+ , offense: O-DEFENSE+.
(2) (Hearing) hand signal - walking: [S] hands rotate over one another , offensive foul: [5] clasps back of head.
(3) conceptual - court: FLOOR
(4) letter - defense: "D" , offense: "O"
(5) abbreviation - quarter: Q-T , overtime: O-T
(6) body classifiers use the whole body to show actions like struggling to open a window, grabbing a hold of a person by the lapels, or putting hands on hips to show displeasure.

The IOC Executive Board leaves the targeted disciplines and events on the Sports Program for the next two Games of the Olympiad....

Racquetball Racquetball is a game played by two, three, or four players on an enclosed court 20 feet x 40 feet x 20 feet high. All wall surfaces, including the ceiling, are in play. In turn, each player (or team) must hit a bouncy blue or green racquetball to the front wall with a strung racquet, using any number of court surfaces (except the floor) enroute. On rebound from the front wall, the other player (or team) must then retrieve the ball before the second bounce and return it back to the front wall. If the ball bounces on the floor twice (TWO BOUNCES) before being hit with the racquet, or hits the floor enroute to the front wall after being hit with the racquet (A SKIP), either results in a LOSS OF RALLY. Each rally begins with a serve.
The winner of the last rally serves the next. Points are earned by the server only. Games can be played to 11, 15, or 21 points. Matches are usually two games to 15 with an 11 point tie-breaker (IRF rules), or best of five 11 point games (Pro rules). The server stands completely inside the service box. The ball is bounced then struck by the racquet directly toward the front wall.

TeamStore Olympic burnout factor Click here for more on this story Posted: Friday May 05, 2000 06:21 PM Another smattering of questions from all corners, so let's dig right in. Remember to keep those questions coming! We're now less than six months from the Games. Is there an increasing surge of interest rising in the 2000 Games in the U.S. public and media? Here in Sydney there is a bit of burnout already, as so many (some minor, some major) controversies have arisen. There is bit of disillusion in the public/media here when it comes to matters regarding Sydney 2000. Andrew McDonald, Sydney You're right on about the burnout factor. I think we in the States were so inundated with stories about the bribery scandal surrounding the Salt Lake City Games that many of the Sydney problems escaped us. I'm sure the Sydney Morning Herald had extensive coverage of the controversy about which groups will participate at the opening ceremonies, whether the volleyball venue at Bondi beach will be built and just who was getting access to Games tickets. Our attention span for yet another controversy that wasn't even national was very short. Another thing: newspapers generally have yearly budgets planned far in advance for baseball season, basketball season, American football season, golf and tennis tournaments, and so on. Many papers blew their Olympics budgets (always smaller in a non-Olympic year) with trips to Utah they hadn't anticipated. As a result, events in Olympic sports that might have received coverage were reduced to copy from wire service reports.

    Racquetball and the Olympics
An Update by Luke St. Onge
Heard time and again – "Why isn't racquetball in the Olympic Games when sports like ‘Ballroom Dancing' and ‘Billiards' are?” Well, the facts are that neither ‘Ballroom Dancing' (now called ‘Sport Dancing') or ‘Billiards' (popularly known as ‘pool') are in the Olympics, regardless of what you hear or read. Lastly, there is a very real political process which must be undertaken after a sport meets all the requirements. The "Olympic-hopeful" must mount a formal election campaign, traveling to over 100 countries and developing very close working relationships with IOC members, staffers and entire organizing committees. How much cash and personnel resources are needed to accomplish this task? It's speculated that a minimum 10-year commitment by the sport's International Federation and over a four million dollar expenditure will just barely meet the requirements for a favorable vote. Even then, the chances remain at 50-50. OK, knowing all this, how does racquetball stack up against these requirements? Well, not too bad, actually. The International Racquetball Federation currently has 91 member countries on five continents. It's open to men and women, and the IRF will host its 9th World Championships in July. Plus, racquetball is currently a full medal sport in the following IOC approved continental games:
