Also, links to Ragtime Audio CDs and Tapes, collections of ragtime sheet music, and books about ragtime, which you can purchase mail-order, are provided below.
As an experiment, I am going to provide some FREE downloadable, GIF format, scanned images of sheet music for some ragtime pieces. The available scores will be EXCLUSIVELY LIMITED TO PUBLIC DOMAIN COMPOSITIONS! Please do NOT ask me to include copies of any compositions published more recently than 1922.
These GIF files can be printed out on your own printer, from your own computer, once you download and unzip the graphic archive file. The quality of these scanned images produces a very good result when printed using a reasonably good graphic program and printer, with 100dpi resolution or better.
One program which works very well for printing the sheet music scans in Windows is a freeware graphics program called IrfanView.
However, it is important that you do not use settings in your graphic program which may reduce the image resolution prior to printing the score. For example, some graphic programs have a setting which reduces the image to fit it entirely within the display screen on your CRT. If this setting is enabled, it generally will reduce the quality of the image, and the printed result will be very poor. Let the image on the computer screen spill outside of the viewable area, and fit the image to a single page when printing from the program.
You can download IrfanView from the author's website at: http://www.irfanview.com/

    Ragtime Music :
Ragtime sprung up as a music form towards the end of the 19th century, and this was one of a number of forms which had their roots in this time period. This increasing diversity resulted from the fusion of African and European musical ideas in the Southern States of the U.S. It wasn't so much a deliberate crafting by music scholars, but more the result of experimentation and informal learning by example, often by self-taught musicians who played in streets and bars. This informal folk music became formalised into Ragtime by composers like Harvey and Joplin who played the music to large audiences and published it so that its popularity was able to spread. Ragtime was played usually on a solo piano, an instrument which most honkytonk bars and saloons possessed. The word Ragtime means "syncopated time", the main characteristic of these pieces being the Right Hand playing a syncopated tune while the Left Hand plays a simple regular line of alternating bass notes and simple chords, often called a "two-step" and not unlike the "Alberti Bass" used in classical music by the likes of Mozart and Haydn. Despite the fact that the Right Hand syncopations were far in excess of anything produced in classical music, the structure of these pieces was nevertheless quite strict in a classical sense. They consisted of a number of contrasting 16 bar sections (usually in 2/4 time) with repetitions and returns to previous sections or a "Da Capo" (return to the begining). This structure is very similar to various march or dance forms or the classical Rondo. Towards the end of each section or phrase there might be rising bass lines, changing harmonies or accidentals to give colour and emphasis to the cadences (phrase endings).

    What is Ragtime ?
Ragtime originated with Black American musicians and is considered to be an early form of Jazz. Like Classical music it is very sophisticated, usually composed and is very similiar to marches. It appears to have gradually evolved out of musical pieces known as "cake walks", with the first true rag being the "Louisiana Rag", published in Oct. 1897, by Theodore H. Northrup. Ben Harney, sometimes referred as the "originator of Rag", was first to publish compositions known as "rags" but they were little more than cake walks. Encyclopedia Americana describes Ragtime as a music generally played on the piano with "highly rhythmic with a steady beat..." with "synopated melodies, played by the right hand...that contrast with the steady strong-and-weak alternations... played by the left hand." Also described as "embodying the prototypical melodic outline AABBCCDD", with "frequently a repeat of A interpolated between the C and D sections."

LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE SQUADRON HISTORICAL INFORMATION The early members of the Escadrille Americaine. "I don't know a single one of the boys who didn't have a deep-seated desire to help France"
A quote from Edwin Parsons, Lafayette Escadrille, on the spirit of the American pilots fighting in France beginning in 1916. Brief Summary. The Lafayette Escadrille (LE) was made up of American pilots based in France that fought against the Jagdstaffeln of Germany prior to the United States entry into World War 1. Originally called the Escadrille Americaine , this group is perhaps as well remembered for their actions in the officer's club, as their success in the skies. The Lafayette Escadrille had 38 American pilots that rotated to other squads within the Lafayette Flying Corps, a part of the French Air Service. In all, 65 Lafayette Escadrille and Lafayette Flying Corps members perished during the air war effort over France. The Lafayette Escadrille was formed in April 1916 and carried the cause of freedom to skies over western Europe until the squadron was absorbed by the United States Air Service in 1918. The music of the times, that included ragtime, was played on a gramophone. Select a ragtime music

Scott Joplin Ragtime Music Guide and More Scott Joplin Scott Joplin, the legendary jazz pianist and "King of Ragtime" music, was born near Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. Near the age of seven he moved with his family to Texarkana. Even at this very early age, Joplin showed his extraordinary gift for music. With encouraging parents, he was proficient on the banjo, and was already starting to play the piano. By age eleven, under the guidance of Julius Weiss, he learned the finer points of musical harmony and style. While a teenager, he worked as a dance musician. He settled in St. Louis, Missouri around 1890, in what is now Scott Joplin House State Historic Site after several years as an itinerant pianist playing in saloons and brothels throughout the Midwest. The Rosebud Cafe typical of the cafes where the early jazz musicians of St. Louis, such as Scott Joplin, got their start. While there Joplin was a major influence in the creation of the style of music now known as Ragtime often refered to as a unique mix of European classical styles blended with African American harmony and rhythm. In 1894 Joplin moved to Sedalia, Missouri, after playing in sporting areas near the Colombian Exposition in Chicago the prior year. From there, he toured far and wide with his eight-member Texas Medley Quartette. One of his first compositions, In the late 1890s, Joplin worked at the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, which inspired the title for his best known ragtime composition, the Maple Leaf Rag, published in 1899. Followed a few years later by The Entertainer, another of his well known compositions. Over the next several years, Joplin added to his already impressive repertoire, which eventually totaled mor than sixty compositions. In 1911, Joplin moved to New York City, where he devoted his energies to the production of his operatic work, Treemonisha, the first grand opera composed by an African American. At the time, however, this endeavor proved unsuccessfull.
