  • The Italian Renaissance
Costume in Italy followed the Gothic style of northern Europe until the mid-15th century. Renaissance clothing
then evolved and was brought to the rest of Europe following the invasion of Italy in by Charles VIII of France. Dress assumed a more natural appearance. The robe appeared, which was actually more a dress with an attached bodice and skirt. Men's doublets grew shorter and hose received greater emphasis. Women's hair reappeared, elaborately trimmed with thin veils, ribbons, and jewels. The use of lace and perfume became more common. The low-necked tunic and chemise for men and the simple and low-necked Juliet gowns of the women had a very rapid effect on the evolution of European costume. For women, early in the Renaissance period there appeared a long, rigid, almost cone-shaped corset reaching well below the waist to a V in front. The breasts were forced upward above the corset until fashions changed with the French Revolution in

  • Early Medieval Clothing
Medieval clothes history traditionally begins with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476. The transition from classical to the medieval clothing was more gradual. The Byzantine Empire continued for another thousand years, with both sexes of the upper classes wearing the tunic as the basic garment. In the West, the invasions from the north brought trousers, fitted tunics, and hoods, but it was nearly three centuries before any recorded Western style evolved from the interaction of Roman and northern European forms of dress. Vast tribal movements took place in the Dark Ages but the earlier Teutonic invasions had small effect other than the introduction of trousers to the Romans. The Teutons adopted Roman dress, as had the Gauls and at least some the Britons. After the Carolingians established political supremacy in a large part of Europe and Charlemagne became Holy Roman emperor in AD 800

Commentary: MR-A200: Introduction to Medieval Studies is a proposed new course that can be covered in five weeks. It will consist of two introductory lectures (50 minutes each) by representatives of each of the six Humanities Departments and the Department of Political Science, designed to provide an overview of the medieval world from the perspective of the respective discipline. There will also be a one-hour introduction to the Vatican Film Library. MR-A200: Also functions as a stand-alone course serving as a primer for medieval studies and as a vehicle for attracting new students. It is not conceived as a prerequisite for any other particular course, but would be required of students during the semester in which they declare their intention to pursue the Certificate, if they have not already taken the course.

    The Original Renaissance Man
Dateline: 04/28/98 As an artist , as an inventor , and as a seeker of knowledge, Leonardo da Vinci was a giant among giants. His curiosity drove him to heights of discovery and creation undreamed of by most and actually approached by a rare few. This one man, who as a child lacked formal education, who as an apprentice surpassed his master in a matter of months, explored more avenues of learning and mastered more disciplines of study than anyone ever before or since. What impresses me most about Leonardo is not his awesome artistic talent nor his keen scientific sense, but rather his overwhelming curiosity and his constant quest to learn how things work and why. It is one small thing I share with him: a need to learn more, and more. I believe this thirst for knowledge explains more than anything else the one great fault attributed to da Vinci: his tendency to leave his work unfinished.

Medieval and Renaissance Studies Advisory Committee    Students interested in this interdisciplinary program may consult any of the following faculty members of the advisory committee: Barrera, Cerasano, Frank, Gallucci, Keller, Luciani, Oliver (Director), Staley, Wetzel The Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MARS) minor concentration enables students to explore the richness and variety of European civilization from the late Roman era through the Renaissance and Reformation. It is intended as a supplement to traditional majors in being broadly interdisciplinary. Spanning the humanities and social sciences, MARS covers history, art, literature, music, philosophy, science, and religion from the fourth to the seventeenth century. Chronological parameters define the Middle Ages as beginning with the rise of Christianity in the fourth century Roman Empire. The Renaissance encompasses the humanism of fifteenth-century Italy, the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, and its aftermath in the seventeenth-century Counter-Reformation. Due to the difficulty of assigning absolute chronological limits to these diverse periods, however, some courses necessarily include material that crosses these boundaries. Moreover, the emphasis in MARS is on creating interdisciplinary bridges across the curriculum, and the program is structured in a way that encourages students to explore a cross section of traditional fields. To this end, MARS courses can center on a topic area proposed by the student and agreed upon in consultation with a faculty advisor. However, courses in the minor should complement each other.
