Rhododendron Hybrids
Native to cool temperate parts of the world, rhododendrons are amongst the most spectacular of all shrubs. They were introduced into Australia in the 1880s. Ever since, enthusiasts have been breeding hybrids specifically for Australian conditions.
The National Rhododendron Gardens at Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges were established by the Victorian branch of the Australian Rhododendron Society. Volunteers from the society cleared the land from scratch and laid out the garden beds. They still give a day's work each week to help maintain the gardens, which are now managed by Parks Victoria.
Many of the society's members are enthusiastic breeders of new varieties of rhododendrons. In 1962 Rhododendron 'Viscount Linley' was the first Australian rhododendron to be registered with the central rhododendron registry in London. Today the registered varieties number over 600.
Jack O'Shannessy has been hybridising arboreum and yakushimanum varieties. The arboreum types originate in Nepal, where the leaves hang down to shed snow so that they don't break off. One variety Jack has bred with this habit is the red-bloomed

Rhododendron bud blast Symptoms
Many rhododendron buds fail to open although they remain on the bush looking silvery. Later in spring they become covered with black 'bristles'. Cause
If the buds don't rot but remain on the plant for two or three years this is symptomatic of rhododendron bud blast. a disease particularly common in southern England. The 'bristles' are, in fact, the spore-bearing bodies of the fungal pathogen Pycnostysanus azalae . Infection is believed to occur by means of the rhododendron leafhopper, which lays its eggs in slits in the flower buds and so provides a point of entry for the fungus. Adult leafhoppers occur on the foliage from mid-July until October. They are about 8mm long with yellow head and legs, a blue-green thorax, and forewings striped with red. Non-chemical control
The best way of removing the source of the infection is to pick off and dispose of the infected buds. Do not add them to the compost heap.

Non-flowering Rhododendrons Dropping buds
Rhododendron flower buds are initiated during late summer and early autumn. A short period of very dry conditions at the roots may cause a check in this process. The plants may subsequently fail to produce flower buds, or buds may only partially form, eventually drying up and dropping unopened, or being easily detached. Prevent this by keeping plants well mulched, watering thoroughly and regularly during dry periods, particularly from July onwards. Greyish-black buds
The disease rhododendron bud blast Pycnostyanus azaleae ) is believed to be spread by the rhododendron leaf hopper ( Graphocephala fennahi ) which is a minor sap-feeding pest. It lays overwintering eggs in slits in the flower buds, providing a means of entry for the fungus. Affected buds do not rot and can remain on the bush for 2-3 years. Control by picking off and destroying affected buds which can be recognised by the fringe of black fungal spores produced along the edges of the bud scales. Adult insects are found on the foliage from mid-July to October. Spraying with a suitable contact insecticide such as permethrin or bifenthrin, or a systemic insecticide such as dimethoate from early August and repeating as necessary, may be beneficial.
