Flower Gardening - Rhododendrons and azaleas Rhododendrons and azaleas – Soil conditions and planting in containers How do you like your rhododendrons? Do you like the giant forms, the medium ones perhaps, or the dwarf kinds? Attraction to plants is often linked to early associations. I personally like rhododendrons semi-wild and high above my head. But some of the smallest varieties also capture my attention. My earliest memories of rhododendrons date back to childhood. Suddenly, when walking among shrubs, I came upon tall branches of leathery-looking, large leaves, topped with magnificent flowers – the most bold and impressive blooms that I had ever seen. I set about picking a bunch to take home to my mother. The flowers of the brightest colours were few and difficult to reach. They tended to be on spindly twigs, threaded through more powerful and vigorous branches carrying mauve flowers. These were spotted in their throats with deeper markings of luscious hues. I became utterly engrossed in the flowers – they gleamed against the dark leaves, like brightly coloured foxgloves gathered on giant inflorescences. Name that Rhodon!

Do you move it when it's ready to bloom? Ciscoe: I know, it's unbelievable, the easiest time to move a rhodie is when it's in full bloom, but before the new growth starts. Meeghan: So now's a good time. Ciscoe: Now's perfect time. You could do this anytime except for when the new growth's coming out. KING The easiest time to move a rhodie is when it's in full bloom, but before the new growth starts. Ciscoe: And it actually could harm it. When it has new growth its actually susceptible to damage. But it won't hurt the flowers a bit to do it right now. Meeghan: OK, so you basically dig it up? Ciscoe: Oh yeah, but there are a couple of tricks. First of all I always take my shovel and I hold it backwards ... and I dig in. What I'm looking for... see right there I felt all these roots ... but here I don't feel hardly any so I kind of go around and go like this. Meeghan: Search for the root ball.

Integrated Pest Management
The Garden as Ecosystem
Twentyfive years ago, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) seemed a utopian dream to mainstream agriculturalists. The idea that plant pests could be kept at acceptable levels without large amounts of chemical pesticides ran counter to everything they had been taught. But now IPM is embraced by nearly everyone involved in the field. What caused the turn around?
Chemical Miracles
When chemical pesticides were first introduced in large quantities in the 1940s, they were seen as miracles of modern life. Now all farmers had to do was spary their crops with DDT, or some other chemical, and they could achieve complete control. But within a couple of decades, problems began appearing. The most important of which is the environmental harm done by chemicals which are both toxic and persistent. Even 25 years after being almost totally banned in the U.S., DDT can still be found in the tissue of animals. But even disregarding environmental concerns, there were a number of other factors that called into question the wisdom of such uninhibited use of chemicals. First, when using an insecticide to control a pest, its natural predators are often killed off as well. This can have the unintended effect of actually causing an upswing in the pest population. Second, many insects can very quickly develop populations resistant to a given chemical. And third, when one pest is eliminated the door is opened to others that were less apparent before their competition was killed off. At first the solution to these problems seemed to be to just use more, or different, chemicals, but eventually it became obvious this was no more than a good way to line the pockets of chemical manufacturers.

Seen in "The Yak," Fraser South Rhododendron Society Newsletter: Another Gardener's Tip: Cheap mulch. In October Jack Lounsbury, Whidbey Island Chapter president, reminds his chapter members of an article by Bill Stipe. Bill uses newspapers to mulch. They make "dandy" weed barriers when place over future rhododendron beds or around plants already covered with bark. He uses 1/2" of paper under 3" of bark. Weeds that manage to come up are easy to pull. Avoid using colored, "glossy" paper and magazines, which may be toxic. RETURN to TOP of PAGE Rhododendron was built Rhododendron was built in 1935 at Portland, Oregon, as a tender for the Lighthouse Service. Upon completion she assumed tender operations out of Portland, which became her permanent station. Before World War II she serviced navigational aids on the Willamette River, in the area of its confluence with the Columbia, and along the nearly hundred-mile reach of the Columbia River before it flows into the Pacific.

About the Society:
The Mount Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society (MARS) is a chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, an international organisation of rhododendron enthusiasts. Our Society provides members with an opportunity to learn about rhododendrons and companion plants, but most importantly, it allows members to socialise with other gardeners and meet new people with similar interests. Our regular monthly meetings include a short educational session, often on a seasonally relevant topic, followed by a guest speaker who typically gives a slide show on some aspect of gardening. Educationals explain how and when to fertilise, how to prune and prepare flower trusses for shows, how to take cuttings, graft and start seeds, and how to generally grow rhododendrons successfully in our climate. Every meeting includes a door prize, a rhododendron raffle, a coffee/tea/cookie break where members can socialise, and usually a dollar table where members can purchase donated rooted cuttings and small plants.

The leaves on my Rhododendron are curling under and the plant looks wilted. Does this mean the plant is dead?
If your plant was healthy last summer, what you describe sounds like a direct response from the plant to cold temperatures. Some Rhododendrons curl their leaves to expose as little leaf surface as possible to the elements, to help minimize damage from the cold. The leaves will recover when the weather warms. Extension Publication EB 1229, How To Identify Rhododendron and Azalea Problems , has more information on growing Rhododendrons.
My spring flowering bulbs are emerging and now they're covered with snow. What can I do to save them?
Relax! Your bulbs will be fine. Plants that grow in cold weather can tolerate a few snowy days. They'll just stop growing until the temperature is above freezing, and then begin to grow again. Flowering may take place a few days later than normal, but the bulbs themselves should suffer no lasting ill-effects.
Moss is taking over my garden and lawn. How can I remove it, and how can I keep it from coming back?
