(Main Objective)Students will learn to recognize rhyming words in print.
Objectives Leading to the Main Objective
  • Students will learn that rhyming words sound the same at the end.
  • Students will learn to recognize rhyming words by how they sound. Materials
Use a book such as Oh, A-Hunting We Will Go by John M. Langstaff or sing the song without a book or recorded music. Langstaff's book has delightful pictures and notation for piano and guitar accompaniment. Procedure
  • Enjoy reading the book and singing the song, "Oh, A-hunting We Will Go." Then put the book aside.
  • Ask for pairs of rhyming words in the story (or song).
  • Print these pairs on the board. Printing them on large cards or a chart is also good. This way, show only one pair at a time.
  • Sing the song again. Point to the rhyming words as the children sing these words.
  • Ask children to add their own rhymes.
  • Have the child print his or her pair of words on the board (card or chart) before singing the child's verse. If some children want to say the words but they do not want to print them, I suggest printing them for the child. Keep fun in the activity.

    LESSON PLAN
    Susan Schepp 1/12/98
Language Arts: rhyming words Grade K-1
    Lesson Objectives:
Students will learn to recognize rhyming words in a poem; students will learn that rhyming words end in the same way and that one or more letters are the same, students will be introduced to graphing.
    Anticipatory set:
Since our letter of the week is M, I am going to read Goodnight Moon. This story has many words in it that rhyme. Can anyone tell the class examples of words that rhyme? Kids may say all sorts of things, teacher tries to guide kids to come up with appropriate answers. Teacher may say, "How do we know when two words rhyme?" Kids may say, "When they sound a like." or , "When one or more letters in the word have the same sound and are the same." After this brief discussion teacher says, " I am now going to read Goodnight Moon. I want you to listen carefully for the rhyming words and words that begin with M.
    Lesson Body:
(This game has a modified version for the kids who are still unable to recognize letters, along with the words are graphic clues on the graph sheet and die)
    Modeling Activity:
On the chalkboard the teacher has a copy of the graph that each kid has at their seat (see figure 1). (The teacher asks a student to come up and help demonstrate.) The teacher rolls the big die, and looks on the chalkboard for the word that showed up on the die, with a colored marker or crayon the teacher colors in the square directly above the word. The teacher could designate a specific color to use for each column/word, perhaps alternating the colors to form a pattern, however the color should be the same in each column. The teacher tells the students to continue to play until a column has filled up, and that will be the winning word. The teacher explains all this very slowly and carefully to the students and then asks if there are any questions and have someone repeat back the directions.

    "Spelling Families"
Objective: Children will learn how to recognize and spell sets of rhyming words.
Children will become familiar with short vowel spelling patterns. About the Concept: Learning to recognize, read, and spell sets of rhyming words is very helpful to beginning readers and writers. Children can spell sets of rhyming words if they learn the rulechange the first part (the letters that come before the vowel) and leave the ending part (the vowel and letters that follow it). For example, if children can spell or read the word cat , they can then figure out how to spell or read the words bat fat hat mat pat rat , and sat by replacing the beginning letter c with other letters. Learning the spelling families give readers the independence to read or write new words without help if they know how to read or write a word that rhymes with the unknown word. All the rhyming words in this song are 3-letter words with short vowel sounds. Because the words are short, they are easy for children to remember. Long vowel rhymes are not used in this song because they have more complex spelling patterns. Example: Long vowel rhyming words, boat and note do not follow the rule about changing the first letter and keeping the ending letters. Children will learn long vowel spelling patterns in

Rhyming Words and Families Now we get to a fun area, the rhythm of our language. Children begin to understand the reading process and begin to understand the concept of word as they recognize different family beginning and ending words. So, grab a jumping rope to begin this level of getting your child ready to read! Invite your child to jump to the rhyme of: Here's Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack All dressed up in black, black, black! Do a finger play or two here is the church (hands form a box) and here is the steeple (fingers form that); look inside and see all the people! (Open hands and arms.) Itsy, bitsy spider is very good here. Here is where pagework is easy and important. King, sing, and ring can be easily illustrated. The child has time to look at the picture and silently say the word. Let the mind work here. Verbal rhyming helps, but there's nothing to look at. Looking at the page is important here and we carefully sequence the more simple rhyming families for you and your child. Initial blends should come after work with rhyming families. We use short, familiar words, such as frog, dog, hog and log, or bat, hat and sat. We do mix in some blends such as bl-ack, cr-ack, tr-ack with Jack, tack and back, or cl-ock and bl-ock with rock, lock and dock.

Reading Strategy #2: Phonics; Rhyming Words
Exciting new research is showing parents and teachers how language and literacy development actually occurs. The research clearly shows that, as a parent, you’ve been playing a crucial role all along. Learning to read starts early – right at home. For instance, you may not realize it, but even when your child was an infant, you were preparing him/her to learn letters. From the rhymes and words and chants the two of you shared to the first time you read a picture book to him/her you were laying the ground work for this journey. All of the Student Services classes are focusing on learning rhyming words. Rhyming can be lots of fun! There is some research that shows that children find it easier to learn to read words when they use rhyming word families (hat, mat, rat.) To help your child recognize rhyming words, read lots of nursery rhymes and poetry aloud. Picture books with rhyming words such as the Dr. Seuss books (
