Title - Rhyming words
By - Debbie Haren
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - 2-4 Materials: ball Procedure: Use the ball to pass it back and forth. First, have the child say a word and then pass the ball. Then the teacher or other person says a word that rhymes with that word. As they get a hang on it the teacher wants to think of a word and then pass the ball. Before the child passes the ball back the child needs to think of a word that rhymes with that word. For younger children it can be a nonsense word. This is just a way for them to start thinking of words and they can rhyme. For older children: Have them say a word to each other then the student passes the ball back but first has to think of a word that rhymes. You can even put a time limit on how long they have to respond. The ball can kept being passed back and forth and keep rhyming until none can think of any other words to rhyme with it. The last person to rhyme with the word wins! Extension: The teacher could also do this with synonyms. Start with a word and they keep passing the ball until no one can think of any more synonyms.

Printable Version for your convenience! Language Arts Initial and Final Sounds With Dr. Seuss' Hop on Pop by Elizabeth Hourigan Saint Joseph College Duration: 30 minutes Grade Level: first Objective: "Given a flip book with preprinted final sounds, students will write the initial sounds of rhyming words on left side flip pages. "Using flip books, students will recognize rhyming words have the same final sound but different initial sounds. Initiation/Set: Introduce the lesson by asking the children to give examples of rhyming words. Students may give examples of words, books, songs or a definition. Discuss the concepts of initial and final sounds. Review with the class that rhyming words have the same final sounds but different initial sounds. Development/Procedure: Closure: Review initial and final sounds with the class. Provide the class with two rhyming words and ask what the difference between them is. Select a final sound next. Call on a student to make two words using the ending provided by the teacher. Repeat until all endings from Hop on Pop have been used. Once children has provided examples, he or she may put supplies away.

Phonological Awareness Programme
Learning to Listen
Learning to Listen is an exciting new series of audio card programmes for use with the Language Master system
Starting with familiar sounds, the child works through carefully graded auditory perception and auditory discrimination activities.
The series helps the child to develop good phonological awareness and ensures a firm foundation for the development of phonic skills. All the cards are printed in full colour. The programme contains 10 sets, each with 24 cards.
Listening to Sounds 1 and 2 (RED SET) These sets are presented with an illustration of an object / animal. On the Master Track, the sound made by the object/animal is recorded.

85. Cognitive Concepts - Research -Phonological
Research A student's ability to identify and produce rhyming words has been foundto be a prerequisite for developing more complex phonological awareness
http://www.cogcon.com/research/basis/phon_applied.stm
How phonological awareness research is applied in Earobics:
Rhyming

Research: A student's ability to identify and produce rhyming words has been found to be a prerequisite for developing more complex phonological awareness skills (e.g., phoneme segmentation and manipulation). It is one of the primary skills to emerge in phonological awareness. Research has proven that rhyming skills lay the foundation for children's understanding of the internal sound structure in words. [ see footnote 1 Earobics: Earobics teaches rhyming skills in two ways: 1) selecting rhyming words from a group of non-rhyming words and 2) selecting non-rhyming words from a group of rhyming words. Earobics builds auditory rhyming skills in a systematic step-by-step progression.
Phoneme Identification
Research: A student who does not recognize and process word sounds accurately will not be able to make the correct associations between letters and phonemes.
Because phonemes are the units of sound that are represented by the letters of the alphabet, an awareness of phonemes is key to understanding the logic of the alphabetic principle.
Before children are able to map printed letters to sounds in spoken language, they must be able to identify those sounds accurately. [

90. BBB Is For BBBear
An overview of rhythmic and/or rhyming schoolyard folklore.
http://www.kith.org/logos/words/upper3/BBBear.html
BBB: Lucy, Suzy, and Mary Mack
(16 January 2000) A while back , I mentioned a jump-rope or ball-bouncing chant in which you make up words starting with a given letter: "A, my name is Alice and my husband's name is Al; we come from Alabama and we sell aardvarks." Ever since then I've been wanting to discuss jump-rope rhymes, counting-out rhymes, and clapping-pattern rhymes, but I didn't have enough material until a recent discussion on a mailing list provided a flood of it. There are a whole bunch of categories of rhythmic and/or rhyming schoolyard folklore, including:
  • Jump-rope rhymes. Often involve some mechanism for swapping people in and out, and/or for counting the number of jumps you survive after getting to the end of the rhyme.
Counting-out rhymes. Said to choose an It or a Not-It.
    Clapping-pattern rhymes.
Taunting rhymes. Said to or about a particular person or people to make fun of them. ("X and Y, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G...")
    Story rhymes/chants/songs. Like "
