  • Evolution of Roller Skating A Belgian inventor named Joseph Merlin introduced the first recorded roller skate in 1760. And, what an introduction he made! He wore his new skates to a party in London, where he crashed into an expensive mirror. He wasn't very interested in skating after this experience. However, other inventors produced some roller skate models, most with in-line wheels to imitate an ice skating blade. Add/View Comments

What you need: A pair of good, sturdy skates, knee, elbow and wrist pads and a leash/restraint for your dog that restrains from under the armpits, rather than the neck. (I recommend The Original Sporn Halter Note on the safety equipment:
I usually use only wrist guards, and am a very good skater, but even I have been taken out twice when Francis spotted a cat I didn't see first hiding behind a fence or bush (and I was carrying stuff and only had one hand freenever do that!!). And when a dog off a leash comes up to you and starts trouble it is harder to maintain control. There is this risk. Just be aware of it. You can't do this unless you are not afraid of falling and know how to take a fall in stride. Even if you usually don't wear all safety gear when skating, using all pads to start skating with your dog, especially if you're not certain of your own ability to skate and control your dog at the same time, is a good move. Did you even know you can get a pad to protect your tailbone? For more information about possible hazards and preventative measures you can take, visit

Web sites for Austria info: From: RRATEICK@vma.cc.nd.edu
Date: Unknown There are cycle paths which go both north and south of the "loop" (the downtown), along Lake Michigan. I have skated up north, starting at Lincoln Park. I have also skated through the downtown both on sidewalks and the streets, although, not during the business day (too many cars). From downtown, a nice skate is up Clark Street north to Wrigley Field. This is an interesting area, with used book/CD stores, etc. You can judge distance based on address numbers: 800/mile. For more information on where to skate (and not too), call the folks at Londo Mondo (sorry, but I can not remember the address). Remember, Chicago does have some really bad neighborhoods. For example, I would not go west of Wells, in the area around Division Street. From: thomasd@tt726.NoSubdomain.NoDomain (Tom Depke)

11. No Skateboarding Or Roller Blading On Downtown Streets
No skateboarding or roller blading on downtown streets as we start taking a closer look at the community's recreational shortcomings, a skateboard park could be considered.

Mayor's Comments
No skateboarding or roller blading on downtown streets
By Jeff Thompson Since we got the u-turn issue taken care of (I only see one or two a week now as opposed to one or two a day before the ordinance was enacted), perhaps I can address a few more traffic safety concerns. These are already ordinances, but worth mentioning now that spring is here. Skateboarding and roller skating or blading are not permitted in the downtown area. Period. Not on the streets. Not on the sidewalks. Not in any parking lots. Perhaps as we start taking a closer look at the community's recreational shortcomings, a skateboard park could be considered. That type of a facility could possibly be part of a swimming pool park complex. I could be persuaded to pursue that farther. Bicycle riders must yield the right of way to any pedestrian on any sidewalk. Ordinance also requires that a bicycle rider give some type of audible signal to any pedestrian that he or she is passing or overtaking on a sidewalk. The same audible signal law applies to skateboarders and rollerbladers when doing so on a sidewalk other than downtown. See above. And, most importantly, it is unlawful for any person operating a bicycle to carry any package, bundle, or article which prevents the driver from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars. Well, duh...!

Inline skating, or rollerblading, is a great recreational and conditioning activityfor both In-line skates are a cross between roller skates and ice skates.
    http://www.nbia.nf.ca/in-line_skating_(roller_blading).htm
Public Awareness: In-line Skating Safety The following information is excerpted from the Childhood Injury Control newsletter, published by the Edmonton Board of Health. The illustrations which accompany this article are also courtesy of the Edmonton Board of Health.Editor. In-line skating, or "rollerblading, is a great recreational and conditioning activity for both children and adults. The popularity of in-line skating has grown at an incredible rate over the last three years, with an estimated one million Canadians now enjoying the sport. In-line skates are a cross between roller skates and ice skates. They are called in-line skates because each skate has three to five round wheels in a line, or single row, instead of paired wheels or a bladeĀ· The narrower, smoother wheels make in-line skates much faster than traditional roller skatesĀ· Injuries from in-line skating Like other sporting activities, in-line skating has its risks. The typical injuries from in-line skating include broken wrists, chipped elbows and bruised knees. Most injuries from in-line skating occur when the skater looses control. The injury rate is highest for people who are skating for the first time. The Canadian picture Data collected by the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRRP) between April 1990 and April 1993 presents a picture very similar to that of the Alberta Children's Hospital. CHIRRP data, collected from 10 children's hospitals and two general hospitals across Canada, also provides insight into where most in-line injuries occur and the most common types of injuries.

NEWLY FURNISHED OCEANSIDE VILLA - WALK TO BEACH
    2 Bedroom, 1.5 Bath Villa, Sleep 6
    Hilton Head, South Carolina
This Hilton Head Villa is located in South Forest Beach in the heart of Hilton Head Island and is the premier place to stay. Situated between Coligny Plaza and Harbortown, you will be centrally located to all of the Island's entertainment, dining, shopping, golf, tennis, and other recreational activities. You do not have to drive everywhere you go when you stay here. It is a 3 minute walk to the beach, 8 minutes to Coligny Plaza, 5 minutes to Fish Tales lounge and 2 minutes to Peckerhead's Pub, and 4 minutes to the General Store and Liquor Store. And for the kids, Waterfun Park is a 5 minute walk away. The recreational path passes right in front of the villa, providing you with trails for biking, roller-blading, jogging, and walking. Lagoons, alligators, and island foliage are just a few of the scenic backgrounds for picturesque settings. And don't forget to take advantage of Hilton Head's most prized possession - the beach.
The villa itself is in the front row of the complex, making it the closest to the beach. There is an enclosed area to store beach chairs, boogey boards, bikes, and wet clothes in the front of the villa. It is tastefully decorated and furnished to provide a relaxing beach atmosphere. Pets are welcome as long as you let me know when you make your reservation. I assume that your pet is up-to-date on all shots and pills, and is well-trained. If not, please make sure it is prior to arrival. If your pet makes a lot of noise when you leave it (like mine!) you might want to consider a bark collar since the villas are connected.
