"A lot goes on underground." Occasionally, this underground world and the daylight world meet, most famously during World War II, when thousands of Londoners sheltered from the Blitz in the stations of the Tube and even the government took refuge underground. But for the most part, the subterranean world is ignored, left to a small army of sewage and subway workers, and to professionals like Ashworth. "Listen," says Ashworth, breathing in the dank, cool air 100 feet (30 meters) below the packed traffic of central London. "You're in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world, and it's dead silent."

Subjects Ancient Greek and Roman Life in Israel
By Jason Turner, Jane Jones, and Ronni Cook The texture of the historical fabric in Israel is richly woven with the influence of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Since the Romans borrowed freely from the culture of the Greeks, the cities constructed by these conquerors during their occupation reflect not only the Roman arches and designs, but the classical styles, proportions, and balance of the typical Greek temple. One of the core concepts in any history curriculum is for students to discover how migration, trade, and occupation changed the lifestyle of a culture and affected the daily life of an ancient people. How much change occurred in Israel as a result of migration and trade? Why did the Romans build such elaborate sites in a state they conquered? What stories do the remaining artifacts and buildings tell historians about how people lived? Virginia's Standards of Learning have major concepts identified to focus teachers' curriculum efforts on teaching information to answer those questions. This helps students understand how our culture has been affected by the past. Israel is the perfect setting for teachers to use to demonstrate these major threads because the country is filled with archaeological sites. Because Israel blends the past and the present in a unique preservation of three major religions, lessons from this region show cause and effect in a wonderfully immediate setting. SOL Correlations:

    People and Projects
The following people have played a major role in making this Web site (or CD-ROM resource) a success. This author is deeply grateful for the help and encouragement they have provided. Many of them are also authors of articles and images that are published here. We will list these individuals in roughly chronological order, arranged by date the author first made their acquaintance.
    Marilyn Kupcho
Marilyn is the Manager of the College of Education Technology Labs at San Jose State University where the myron.sjsu.edu had its conception and incubation. On one fateful day in late 1996 Your Humble Author was a student assistant (Not yet even a graduate assistant) who had an old Pentium 120 computer with Windows 95 he had used for a project during his student teaching days. "Is it all right if I try to build an experimental Web server here in the lab? The faculty may someday want to publish their course materials and College of Education news on the Web and it would be good if we knew a little about this." Little did Marilyn know what a ride she (and all the rest of us) were in for! The Roman history content was your Author's idea so as to have a site that might actually serve up useful content for sixth - grade classroom consumption rather than meaningless placeholders and test pages. Marilyn has been right there beside me throughout my professional, personal, and technological growth through the interveneing years. The evolution of the College of Education Information and Networking Infrastructure would never have been possible, let alone the overwhelming success that it has been, if it had not been for her guidance and leadership, regardless of how many network geeks anyone could have assigned to ite development.
