Louisa May Alcott by Lorraine Curry (1832-1888) When she was two, Louisa May Alcott's family moved to Boston, where her father established a school (described in Little Men). He later attempted to start a religious and vegetarian community. Her mother was a "Boston lady of great culture and beauty" whose girls almost idolized her while she gently ruled and guided them. Her three rules: "Love yourself," "Love your neighbor," and "Do the duty which lies nearest you" surely influenced Louisa May. Horatio Alger Alger wrote 109 books between 1868 and 1898. For the Alger hero, wealth and success were rewards for duty, patience and resignation, not the result of struggle and competition, but gifts of Providence, chance, virtue, and good fortune. A writer for boys should have an abundant sympathy with them. He should be able to enter into their plans, hopes, and aspirations. He should learn to look upon life as they do. Boys object to be written down to. A boy's heart opens to the man or writer who understands him. Horatio Alger

    GYMNASTICS by Dan Gutman
    Viking May 1996; $14.99 US/$18.99 Canada hardcover187 pages; ISBN 0-670-86949-X
    Very Highly Recommended
Author Dan Gutman has scored a perfect 10 in his nine-chapter book simply titled, GYMNASTICS. The book contains a forward, introduction and glossary at the beginning, and at the end, a section called "about this book," a bibliography, index, and an "about the author" section. There are eight pages of glossy color photos in the middle of the book, and black and white photos of many famous gymnasts are scattered throughout its 187 pages. The perspective he provides in this very highly recommended book is fresh and insightful. He provides a view of the sport which is unique and he has carefully researched and crafted this book. He manages to give a view of gymnastics that shows both the good and bad found in the sport. His two page "about this book" section is extremely interesting, especially from my point of view as a writer and a fan of the sport of gymnastics. The author says that Temple gymnastics coach Fred Turoff asked him what qualified him to write a book on the subject of gymnastics, to which Gutman answered, "Nothing." It was quite revealing that he came from knowing nothing about the sport to doing his research and writing a credible book. His background is more in general sports writing, but I believe he gives an excellent perspective on this sport, and is able to do so without using so many technical terms found in many gymnastic stories and publications. He gives a comprehensive look from the ancient Greeks to current day gymnastics, which he describes as one of our most popular sorts.

The Library adheres to DDC for the classification of Shakespeare, as well as for very general works falling within the 800-809 range. The rationale for maintaining abbreviated or modified numbers for individual literatures (rather than changing with the ever expanding Dewey schedules) is primarily due to the need to maintain collocation of materials on the shelves, particularly with regard to literary authors, philosophers, artists, composers, and the like. The UIUC Library attempts to bring together all the works by or about an individual author, as well as works by or about more than one author who are writing either in one particular language or within one designated national or regional literature.
