http://www.romantictimes.com/f_reader/f3a_49.html
What's The Appeal? Jane Austen's heroines and Bronte's Jane Eyre are early prototypes, but the Plain Janes in most romance novels reference the common woman. This heroine accepts the general opinion around her that her looks, or her manners, or her thinking aren't special. However, while she may want a better life, she doesn't focus on perfection the way her society does. The other meanings of the word "plain" equally apply in defining the heroine: she's unsophisticated, modest, honest, tranquil, of good intellect and independent by choice. Any suffering she experiences stems from the limits society places on her because of her looks. Authors' Thoughts... Jude Deveraux
"I love the idea of the Plain Jane. We can identify with them. No one in real life resembles a supermodel. We're normal people living normal lives." For a novel that captures the essence of "the one least likely," Jude Deveraux recommends Courting Miss Hattie by Pamela Morsi Monica Jackson
Beverly Sommers Eugenia Riley
"Since the Plain Jane heroine so often experiences ridicule at the hands of others, I love to watch the growth in this heroine's psyche as she comes to realize she truly is beautiful in the eyes of her one special hero." For an excellent book of this type, I recommend

Charlton lowered the steel shutters over the store windows, secured the back door, and locked the cash register. "When you're finished, you can leave," said the voice, it's redheaded owner appearing from behind the back room door.
"Bye, Frank," called Charlton as he exited the door. Charlton had worked as a salesman for a camping equipment store called, "Venture Outdoors" for the past three years. He enjoyed the work, and the pay didn't hurt either. Once in a while, Frank, the owner of "Venture Outdoors," would collect the names of a few people who wanted to go camping, but were too inexperienced to go by themselves. After each person had paid a nominal sum, Frank would furnish the required supplies. As Charlton for a guide, he would lead them to the best camp sights and instruct them in the do's and don'ts of outdoor survival. Depending on the humor of the city dwellers who were unused to "roughing it," the camping trip would last three to five days. Charlton inhaled a deep breath of fresh Montana air and started his sports utility vehicle (SUV).

Love, Inc. I'm sure it's no coincidence that it arrived so close to Valentine's Day - a small, nondescript envelope from The Relationship Company, tagline "When Love Needs A Strategy." It was addressed personally to me - well, to resident anyway. And while technically I don't RESIDE in the post office box, I am the box holder which makes me the closest thing to the resident. So I open the envelope to find a letter that begins "Dear Single Friend:" Rapture! All these years of searching and I've finally got a friend! My friend even has an office in the town next to me, a business reply address in the same state and a bulk rate postage stamp from Sioux City Iowa! I can even call my FRIEND toll-free! My friend tells me in the letter that I've been putting everyone else ahead of myself. I barely give myself the time or the opportunity to "meet that special person who can help you begin enjoying the finer things in life again." They astutely point out that dating in the 90's is a lot different than it is on TV, in the movies and in romance novels. I think my friend is correct, even if they don't realize that it's no longer the 90s and that TV, movies and romance novels are both fictitious and designed to be dramatic works. But hey - they're from Iowa.

The Not So Worthless Romance Novels and Their Unscathed Younger Readers Kristin Cockerel
Reading the Romance , the average age for romance readers is 24-49 according to Fred Kerner, Harlequin’s vice-president for publishing, in 1984 (55). This is the age group that Radway and many others are concerned with in the studies of romance novels and romance readers. A 1982 survey of romance readers in The Romance Revolution reported that about 12% of the readers were either under the age of 16 or ages 16-25 (119). While younger readers may not represent the majority they nonetheless exist as a portion of the romance reading population, and as a portrayal of romance novels in a positive light will demonstrate, these younger readers can benefit from reading romance novels. If individuals achieve a pleasant feeling or increased vocabulary or more effective communication skills or escape from their romance reading, then romance novels do possess value and do result in benefits that they would not have received had they not opted to read. How to Write a Romance and Get it Published , more than 24 million people read all kinds of romances (1). Romantic Fiction includes: Historical Romance, Regency Romance, Series or Category Romance, Romantic Suspense, Western and Indian Romance, Long Contemporary Romance, Futuristic Romance, Science Fiction Romance, Gothics, and Time-Travel Romance (6-8). Radway reports that romance novels equal more than one-third of the sales of mass market paperbacks (4). A February 1998 report
