7. AOTW: In the publishing business, do you feel there is a stigma attached to romance novels and, by extension, romance authors? Are the subgenres that are being used to define novels today - romantic suspense, historical romance, romantic mystery - an attempt to eliminate any stigma attached to the romance genre? Madeline Hunter: I think that there is a stigma of sorts on all mass market genre fiction within the industry. Original paperbacks don't get much "literary" respect in general. On the other hand, romance has a huge readership, and that gives the genre some economic clout in the industry. Readers and writers of romance often complain about the unfair stigma, but they are speaking of a prejudice in the media and in the culture at large, where romance is not understood and is too often reduced to the "bodice ripper" cliche.' I don't think that the subgenres have anything to do with an attempt to eliminate the stigma. I think that they are marketing labels, so that readers who prefer one type of romance can find it easily. Nora Roberts: First, romantic suspense, etc., are hardly new. Mary Stewart wrote marvelous romantic suspense starting with

8. AOTW:
What are some things that you think could help increase awareness and sales of romance books? Kerrelyn Sparks: There are plenty of good ideas out there. One good one is to advertise romance books at movie theaters (during the advertisements before the film begins). After all, people who enjoy a good romantic movie should also enjoy a good romantic book. Also, awareness of romance will increase as more romances are made into movies (example-romance author Meg Cabot with Princess Diaries ). Recently, author Deborah Smith has sold the movie option on a romance titled Sweet Hush . Romances are also creeping into the curriculum of college campuses. This sort of acceptance will do wonders.
Carly Phillips: Good question! I'd like to see romance be introduced to the mainstream public a little more. I think that would necessitate publisher support in major magazines and newspapers.
Rachel Gibson: The most powerful selling tool is to write a good book. Good cover art help. Good placement within a store is important, but the most important thing is a good marketable story.

General Fiction Reviews January 2003 A PLACE CALLED RAINWATER – Dorothy Garlock A Perfect 10 Warner Books ISBN: 0-446-52950-8 January 2003 Historical Fiction/Romance Rainwater, Oklahoma – 1929 Dorothy Garlock opens her third novel set in America’s 1920s with a chilling prologue depicting the inception of evil. She then gathers an ensemble cast of spirited, down-to-earth characters headed by some of the minor players from THE EDGE OF TOWN. Jill Jones is now twenty and come to the oil boomtown of Rainwater to run her ailing Aunt Justine’s hotel. Growing up within a large family with boisterous big brothers prepared her well to hold her own with the local roughnecks. They have learned to respect the little wildcat with the ready fists and tongue. Too bad Thad Taylor doesn’t show some of that respect when he arrives in town to find Jill in an altercation with a few rowdies. He bullies his way into the fray and gives her a thorough scolding. He certainly gets off on the wrong foot with his best friend’s little sister, who has miraculously grown into a beauty. Thad grew up in Fertile, Missouri in the farm next to the Jones place. He and Joe Jones were working the oilrigs near Tulsa when they were asked by Jill’s father to keep an eye on her. Jill had once had a crush on Thad, but now she was badly riled and not a little hurt at being treated like a little sister. It took going behind her back to Aunt Justine for Thad to move into the hotel to help out while waiting for Joe and their friend Randolph Bluefeather to arrive.

Romance Facts
Facts about Regency Romances
  • Over 2000 romance novels are published each year. Romance novels account for over 55% of all mass market paperbacks published in the United States, for a total of nearly $1 billion in sales annually. Over 10% of these are romances set during the Regency period in England, Scotland, or Wales (1810-1830). The Regency period accounts for more romance novels than any other period in history. A historian once noted that if every lord and lady written about in Regency novels were to be placed in England, the nation would have sunk under the weight. Jane Austen wrote the first Regency romance (although, as she wrote them during the Regency, they were contemporary novels in her time). The other best-known Regency romance writer is Georgette Heyer, whose books are on the shelves now more than 20 years after her death. This is an amazing record for the romance genre in general, where a paperback love story has a six-week shelf life.
Facts about Romance Readers
  • An estimated 45 million women in North America read romance novels.
