Biographical Details on Boys' Clothing Styles
Figure 1.This little American boy grew up to be one of the most influential statesman in the 20th century. He significantly influenced the lives of all Americans as well as people in other countries around the world. Here he was photographed with his elderly father at about 6 years of age (1888). His curls had been cut, but he was still dressed in a kilt suit. Many famous and not so famous men remember the clothing and hair styles they wore as boys. Not so many years ago it was all up to mom how junior was dressed. In some cases, especially in the late 19th and early 20th Century, moms in Europe and America let their imaginations run wild, choosing elaborate Fauntleroy and kilt outfits for their darling sons. The wife in affluent families rarely worked and thus she had a great deal of time, and in some cases the assistance of nannies and governesses, to see to the care and dressing of their children. The results were very little boys kept in dresses . Ever after they passed out of dresses, little and not little boys done up in dress-like

ROYALTY AND GENIUS
By Robert M. Adams , Reply by Daniel Albright
In response to All the King's Men (March 15, 1984) To the Editors Though not much disposed to quarrel with Professor Daniel Albright's review of my Land and Literature of England NYR , March 15], I feel bound to comment on a couple of points. Professor Albright also attributes to me the view that the Bayeux tapestry is the principal source of our knowledge of the Battle of Hastings. He may have got this impression from a caption under a picture, but it is ridiculously false. Could anyone possibly suppose that Professor E.A. Freeman's fifteen-volume History of the Norman Conquest Still, the review, though loosely written (ah, the wordage I could have squeezed out of it), was not unfair. The conditions under which the book was to be used required sharp images, bold contrasts, many omissions, and an occasional striking detail, to keep the weary student awake. As I carefully explained in the Foreword, it is an introductory book; and an introductory book which led its readers only into the arms of Morpheus would not be accomplishing much. Robert M. Adams

Julius Caesar
Young Caesar
If you don't know much about Roman history, it may surprise you to learn that Julius Caesar was not born royal and it is debatable whether he should be called an emperor. But he set the stage for the restoration of Rome's monarchy and founded a family that ruled the empire for nearly 100 years. He was born around 100 BC and named Gaius Julius Caesar after his father, a low-ranking Roman official. Young Caesar's mother, Aurelia, was the daughter of a former consul. The family was not extremely wealthy or powerful, but they were well-connected members of Rome's aristocracy, the patrician class. Caesar was proud of his ancestry, claiming to be descended from both the legendary Roman king Ancus Marcius and the goddess Venus. Nonetheless, his family was identified with the popular or democratic party; his aunt Julia married the "new man" Gaius Marius, who had risen from a humble background to become a prominent politician and general. When Caesar was 15 or 16, his father died. At that time Rome was engaged in a civil war, and Caesar made it clear which side he was on by marrying Cornelia, daughter of the popular leader Cinna. The marriage did not turn out to be a good career move for Caesar in the long run. Cinna was murdered and his enemy Sulla seized control of the government. Sulla ordered Caesar to divorce Cornelia, but Caesar refused and went into hiding to avoid arrest. Eventually Sulla was persuaded to pardon the rebellious young man, but he warned his followers that Caesar would be the ruin of the patrician party.

Prince William
William of Wales
Prince William Arthur Philip Louis was born on June 21, 1982 at St Mary's Hospital in London. From the start his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, tried to give him as normal a life as possible. He was the first heir to the British throne to be born in a hospital, the first to wear disposable diapers, and the first to attend nursery school. Of course, Prince William's childhood was anything but typical. At the age of five he told friends that he wasn't allowed to know the name of his school "for security reasons." He can't fly in the same plane as his father because an accident might take the lives of two future kings. Wherever Prince William goes, bodyguards (and photographers) are not far behind. Prince William has one sibling, his brother Harry, who was born in 1984. It's said that they get along well together, and that William is very protective of his brother. In fact, William is said to get along well with everyone. His father had trouble fitting in at school and was cruelly hazed, but Prince William has always been popular with his classmates. His first school was Mrs. Mynors's Nursery School in London, which he attended for two years. Then he spent three years at Wetherby School, also in London. He proved to be good at reading, spelling and swimming (a sport his mother excelled at during her school years).

Wilhelm II, King of Prussia, German Emperor (1859-1941)
Wilhelm II , German Emperor and King of Prussia , was not very favorably impressed with the Nazis. Before the war, he allowed one of his sons, Prince August Wilhelm , to join the SA, but he was angry at how involved the Prince became in Nazi politics and eventually all but disowned him. The Kaiser’s wife, Hermine When Hitler invaded the Netherlands, the British government offered the Kaiser asylum in Britain. The Kaiser appreciated the irony of the British government’s offer (to a man accused of war crimes by the Allies after the First World War), but he refused the British government’s kind offer. He also refused to reenter Germany, however, even despite a Nazi offer to allow him to settle into retirement anywhere he wanted in the Reich. During the campaign in France in 1940, the Kaiser’s grandson, Prince Wilhelm , was killed in action. The funeral was attended by huge crowds in Berlin, and Hitler, peeved, promulgated a secret protocol that all Hohenzollerns were to be expelled from the Armed Forces as soon as possible. This secret protocol affected one of the Kaiser’s sons (Major-General Prince Oskar of Prussia ) and several of his grandsons (including Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia , Prince Georg Wilhelm of Hanover , and Prince Burkhard of Prussia ), and even distant cousins (including Prince

Who's Who
Updated - Sunday, 9 March, 2003 No history of the First World War would be especially intelligible without a Who's Who gallery of its primary protagonists. This section of the website goes some way towards providing background information on the people who shaped events and perceptions. Each biography contained within this section is assigned to one of the following sub-categories: Royalty Monarchs and their heirs Politicians Political figures who prosecuted or opposed the war Commanders Military leaders who oversaw battlefield strategy The new form of war in the air Authors who wrote about the war as they saw it Miscellaneous Miscellaneous biographical sketches Also A-Z Listing Complete listing of all profiles on the site By Country Listing of profiles country by country In addition to the kind of entries you would expect to see - royalty and military commanders (a role often combined in Kaiser Wilhelm II's German army) - there are listings for national politicians - and for one or two literary figures. Whilst there is a separate section of the website dedicated to the prose and poetry that emerged from the war - either during or after - a few notables established a name for themselves as military figures too, such as T.E. Lawrence (better known as Lawrence of Arabia) and, of course, the man of many roles and talents, Winston Churchill.

Excerpt from Motion Picture Biographies by John W. Cones Hollywood Biopics - Concluding Observations Analysis of this body of films, the Hollywood biopics, considers the geographic setting for such films, the occupations portrayed, time and sex biases, ideology, historical accuracy and the race, culture and ethnicity of the biopic subjects. In some instances, the conclusions of the author of the earlier work in this area (George Custin's Bio/Pics) are compared with those of the more contemporary study. In other instances, this later study places an emphasis on different issues which are critical in gaining an understanding of the Hollywood-based U.S. film industry. GeographyAs Custen points out, "[i]n their projection of biography onto a world map, Hollywood created a distorted view of accomplishment that sustained an image of history that . . . made it appear that entire domains of achievement had been invented by Americans . . . " Custen's study of biopics, which only surveyed the genre through the middle of the century, reveals that "[t]wo-thirds of all biopics are either about Americans or set in America . . . " and "[a]fter the United States, Europe appears to be the center of the biographical universe, with 22 percent of films set there." As Custen pointed out for his study, if " . . . the American and European totals (are combined) . . . 89 percent of all famous people are either American or European . . . Asia and Africa account for only 3 percent of all biopics (in Custen's study) . . . "
