Syracuse, NY 13221-4840 Most of the project teams will be finishing their meetings in December. Beginning in January, the Post will be having a series of outings at other local companies and see other types of Engineering in action. They are in the process of ordering T-shirts for each active Post member and will distribute them at a future meeting. The following towns are represented by the Explorer Post membership Rube Goldberg Project: Electronic Construction Project: Explorers in this project are getting the chance to do a lot of "hands on" construction of electronic circuits. They started out with the basics of how to safely use the tools such as wire cutters and soldering irons. Then on to learning how to read an engineering drawing, schematic, parts list and assembly procedure. They experimented with a number of simple circuits to learn about electronic components: how to distinguish a diode from a capacitor; how to tell the value of a resistor, how to tell the polarity of an LED (light emitting diode).

PROJECTS IN ACCELERATED PHYSICS
ASKING FOR OUTSIDE HELP ON A PROJECT: Click here for rules on outside help. This is a list of projects which we typically do in Accelerated Physics. PROJECT DETAILS PICTURE? ROLLER COASTER Students work individually to design a roller coaster which varies between zero and 5 g's. This project involves calculations using equations we have developed in class. A simple scale model is made by bending wire. The model is used to measure radii of curves and distances traveled. Use of a spreadsheet makes this project easier - your instructor will be glad to teach you how to use a spreadsheet if you do not yet know how.
HOW THINGS WORK Students work individually or in groups to investigate how an electromechanical device works. Students should dig to the smallest detail, finding out how the motors, switches electronics, and gears work. Students are encouraged to use written sources as well as mentors to help them in their investigation. Your instructor will help you find a mentor if you need one. Some example devices include a tape player, hair dryer, smoke detector, camera, thermostat and furnace, fuel-injectors.
RUBE GOLDBERG Students work in groups of up to 3 to make a complex energy transfer device which does a simple task. In the past tasks have included buttering toast, making a smile, extinguishing a candle, and making juice. Each device must include 5 forms of stored energy and 12 action transfers. Students actually build the device and display it on the due date. Parents are invited to attend the showing. Students may receive help from adults (engineers, etc.) as long as the students work with the adult and do not merely watch. Names of helpful individuals are available.

CU-BOULDER ENGINEERING STUDENTS
TO SHOWCASE NOVEL INVENTIONS
University of Colorado at Boulder engineering undergraduates will showcase a variety of new inventions in the next two weeks, ranging from devices to assist people with disabilities to zany contraptions in honor of cartoonist Rube Goldberg. Freshmen in CU-Boulder's first-year engineering projects course will demonstrate devices they designed and developed to assist Boulder area school children and adults with disabilities at 9 a.m. on Nov. 7 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13. The demonstrations will be held in room ECME 215 of the engineering center. The devices include a page-turner for an adult with cerebral palsy, an interactive board game to entertain and stimulate a disabled child, a device to keep a woman with impaired memory skills from wandering away and a bicycle-like device to teach a disabled person basic walking motions. In all, more than a dozen assistive technology devices will be demonstrated at the two events. The engineering undergraduates who designed the various devices first met with their clients and then worked in teams on the projects. The goal is to improve some aspect of the life of each person, according to mechanical engineering Professor Lawrence Carlson and electrical and computer engineering Associate Professor Jim Avery, who are teaching the two sections.

is primarily a group-project oriented course. All of the assignments are done in groups, except for four: the post-it flipbook, final project story idea, forward kinematic walks, and the hierarchical figure design. The remaining assignments:

Not page after page of busywork; but meaningful, interesting assignments that expand on the topics that the children are pursuing in class and which invite parents and children to work together. Homework doesn't need to be boring! It should challenge kids to think, explore, and pursue tangible projects that give them a sense of satisfaction. Many families worry that Montessori doesn't offer enough structure and academic challenge at the elementary and middle school level. A well planned homework program will overcome many of these concerns. Children in America typically spend more than six hours a days glued before their TVs or videogames! Much of what they engage in is violent, mindless, and certainly not inspiring of high personal values. Hallway mural The Short North area is known for its galleries and art stores, theaters and music festivals, but in addition, this district is home to one of the few arts-oriented schools in Columbus. Arts Impact Middle School (AIMS) on West Fourth Avenue is the only middle school in the Columbus Public School System with an emphasis on arts-infused curriculum, where students, grades six through eight, learn traditional subjects through the arts: music, dance, visual arts, theater, photography, and film. Before AIMS, there were no arts impact middle schools in Columbus. The school emerged from the revamping of several traditional schools. For years, Columbus Public Schools operated alternative/arts-oriented schools like Duxberry Alternative Arts Impact (Elementary) and Fort Hayes High School with no middle school connection. A few years ago, when the Board of Education was looking at the closure and restruc-turing of some of its schools, it created the Afrocentric School and the Spanish and French Immersion Schools (formerly elementary centers), making them K-8 Centers. At the same time, the arts community was expressing a similar desire for an arts/alternative middle school link. In response to this need, the board created the Arts Impact Middle School. Everett Middle School closed in order to accommodate AIMS, which was established in its current location with the 1998-1999 school year. Prior to moving to its present site on West Fourth Avenue in the Short North, the school was housed for two years in a temporary site at Sharon Elementary School. Initially there were only about ten teachers at AIMS. In its fourth year of operation, faculty and staff now number around sixty. AIMS produced its first graduating class of 200 students in the spring of last year and recently received a $50,000 grant, an Ohio Governor's
