What is Rug Hooking?
Rug hooking uses a hand hook, similar in shape to a crochet hook, to form a looped pile from fabric strips or yarn on an even-weave base fabric. 4. HOOKED! The Traditional Rug Hooking Home Page
What is traditional rug hooking? The use of punchneedles and speedhooks is also commonly, and correctly, called rug hooking .
http://www.rughookingonline.com/hooked/hooked.html
Bluenose Hooked Rugs pattern, circa 1920, John E. Garrett, Ltd., New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada. Image adapted from an illustration in "Garretts and the Bluenose Rugs of Nova Scotia" by Nanette Ryan and Doreen Wright) What is traditional rug hooking? Traditional hooking uses a hand hook, similar in shape to a crochet hook, to form a looped pile from fabric strips or yarn on an even-weave base (such as burlap, monks-cloth, divider cloth, or linen). This technique arose in the North American colonies during the first half of the nineteenth century, and provided a warm floorcovering for the bare floors of pioneer homes that could be created from a discarded feed-sack and scraps of fabric from the rag-bag. It also provided a rare creative outlet for worldly women whose work was truly never done. Today their handwork is revered as folk art - and contemporary rug hookers are creating rugs, chair seats, wall hangings, trivets, Christmas tree ornaments, carpetbags, clothing, jewellery,... Traditional rug hooking is NOT latch-hooking (which forms a knotted pile from short pieces of yarn, using a very different hand hook). As a result, I'm afraid that latch-hookers won't find what they need in the FAQ.

#33 Bless This Cape 30 x 40 $50.00 on linen
# 23 Nantucket Welcome 14 x 27 $30.00 on linen Because I live in and love an early house, I strive to design rugs in character with 18 th and early 19 th century antiques. From the style of early chintz, crewel embroidery, samplers, theorems, woven coverlets, and of course, old hooked rugs, I seek to create rugs that might have been hooked in that early time. Sharing the patterns with friends led to a small pattern business, which has its roots twenty-two years ago. This web site is a new way to reach out to others who love antiques and hooked rugs.

Hooked Rugs
Hand crafted in the rich folk tradition, these elegant hooked rugs and wall hangings provide a rich, thick texture you'll treasure for years. I use only the finest wool cut into strips, then worked into loops with a traditional rug hook through heavy cotton backing. The wools are carefully hand-dyed if necessary to achieve the desired colors and shadings. These exacting techniques allow for fine detail and subtle shading in your special one of a kind design. Select the colors, shape, size and type of pattern you desire and I'll work with you to create a most elegant rug or accent piece. You'll find hooked rugs complement a spectrum of decors...from classic to contemporary, even primitive. Adorn floors, walls, or furnishings-in your home or office-with your custom made work of art.
