About Us and Punch Needle Rug Hooking
Red Clover Rugs carries supplies for both traditional rug hooking and punch needle rug hooking and has been in business for over 13 years. Our specialty is punch needle rug hooking. We feature over 300 colors of hand-dyed rug yarns in our studio and are always adding to that selection. We have put together two yarn samplers with actual pieces of the yarns to make it easier for you to pick your colors. We are located in the middle of a small vineyard in the hills of the Willamette Valley, not far from Eugene, Oregon. Our studio is open to the public every Tuesday and the second Saturday of the month from 9 AM to 3 PM. If you can't make it on those days, please call for an appointment. We love visitors so bring your hooking and we’ll put the kettle on for you. During the summer there is a very large garden to sit and hook in or just wander around.
Punch Needle Rug Kits Here are just a few examples of over 35 kits we have available. Most of the yarn we use in our kits is hand-dyed and because we make each kit when you order it, you can specify color changes! The yarn is then wound into balls, numbered with placement noted, packaged with complete written directions and a "map". With only a simple rug frame (we give you directions on how to make your own) and a punch needle tool you're ready to hook!

68. Rug Hooking Defined
rug hooking Defined. Traditional Hooking. How Do you Do Traditionalrug hooking? Traditional rug hooking uses a hand tool
http://www.red-clover-rugs.com/rcrpage4.html
Rug Hooking Defined Traditional Hooking How Do you Do Traditional Rug Hooking? Traditional rug hooking uses a hand tool (similar in shape to a crochet hook with a wooden handle) to form a looped pile from fabric strips or yarn on an even-weave backing fabric. Punch needles and speed hooks are also used to make hooked rugs. Although the hooking techniques are different, the finished rugs are very similar. Traditional rug hooking is not the same as latch-hooking, which uses a hinged hook to form a knotted pile from short, pre-cut pieces of yarn. How Old is Rug Hooking ? Jute was invented in the 1820’s and became readily available in the form of feed sacks across North America by the 1850’s. At this point in time hooking began in earnest. Rug hookers were not so picky about what they hooked with at first. They used woolen yarn called "thrums" discarded by weavers in the mills, cotton rags, wool fabric, wool yarns, flannel, paisley and homespun. They used everything that was cheap and readily available. Then around 1880 an man named of Ebenezer Ross of Toledo, Ohio started experimenting with the idea of rug hooking at a faster speed. He had probably observed his wife's slow progression on a traditionally hooked rug and, being the inventive type, thought he could improve on the process. In 1881 he introduced a punch needle now called a rug shuttle; this is the earliest documented punch needle. From then on there have been many forms of punch needles.

Welcome to Hooked by Design!
Rug hooking, a popular 19th century craft in Britain and America has caught the imagination of people today and is experiencing an exciting revival.
Hooking is as easy to master as cross-stitch, embroidery, tapestry or any other sewing related craft. The technique is simple: just pull loops of yarn throught the hessian weave and create beautiful rugs, cushions or pictures in next to no time.
HOOKED BY DESIGN was started in 1993. After seeing the technique demonstrated at a local craft show I was ‘hooked’. On display were the most appealing rugs and cushions – so rich in texture and colour. I immediately wanted to have a go myself! After creating a few pieces for my home, friends expressed an interest in the designs and the hooking technique so I started producing kits.
Each kit contains full hooking instructions, a custom made hooking tool, ample yarn, hessian on to which the design is printed, a colour swatch and a simple ‘hooking by numbers’ pattern.
Some kind of frame is essential when hooking- it holds the hessian taut, freeing both hands for hooking which helps to keep the loops even. You may already have a frame that you use for embroidery, canvas work or cross stitch that can be adapted for hooking.

All About
Rug Hooking
"Hooked rug - a little rug for your hearthstone.”
The English Dictionary of 1810 There is much romantic legend buried deep in the history of hooked rugs. In America, hooked rugs were first made in Maine and the Maritime provinces, and later in New Hampshire and the eastern areas of Canada. Today, rug hooking is known throughout America. New England is still a rich resource for antique hooked rugs. Early American homemakers relied on wool and linen as their primary textiles, and every cast-off scrap was used in making rugs. These were made first for the bed for warmth and then for the floor. The foundation for early hooked rugs was woven flax. Later, when various commodities began to imported from overseas, burlap made from jute became available. These sacks were washed and sewn together to make rugs of various size. Designs for hooked rugs were drawn using charcoal from the fireplace. Early patterns were borrowed from quilts, and often immortalized a friendly horse or house pet. Gay sprays of flowers and scenes were also drawn. These designs were bold and naïve. A home was very personalized in this way, especially when it came to pattern and color. Color was chiefly obtained using natural dyes. Nowadays, we use chemical dyes to overdye the wool and rugs portray beautiful arrays of the color palette.

Dorothy "Dot" Sullivan got hooked on rug hooking in 1982, after seeing Margaret Howell's rug display at an art exhibit in Greenville. Howell taught Sullivan the craft, and Sullivan quickly began hooking and setting up her own rug displays. "I loved it," said Sullivan, who creates her own designs, and dyes her own wool. "It enhanced my first interest, which is art. It gave me an opportunity to create art in another medium. I was able to paint with wool, through hooking." Over a decade later, Earnestine "Teena" Whittenberg saw Sullivan's handiwork, and was totally mesmerized by the craft. Sullivan wasn't certified to teach, so she introduced Whittenberg to Greenville resident Howell, who has taught rug hooking for more than 60 years. Since then, Whittenberg and Sullivan have taken classes locally and attended rug camps across the country. And three years ago, Sullivan became a certified rug-hooking instructor of the Southeastern McGown Guild of Rug Hookers.

The earliest rugs used potato or grain sacks as backing. This cheap, popular source of canvas was widely available, durable, and easily handled. Gunnysacks, initially imported from India to England in the 1820s, were introduced into North America in mid-century and their use quickly became widespread. To make rugs, artists unsewed the seams of gunnysacks and stretched the resulting canvas on a home-made loom. Some hooked without using a loom, supporting the work on their knees. The loom was usually made from soft wood so that the nails and staples holding the canvas could be easily hammered in. The traditional loom consisted of a frame formed by four laths, two of them mobile so that the work surface could be moved around as required. At the turn of the century, commercially made looms appeared on the market. Some were free standing, while others had two cylinders making it possible to roll unused canvas onto one cylinder and the completed work onto the other. RUG HOOKING
