Resistive Training
The relationship between resistance exercises and muscle strength has been known for centuries. In ancient Greece, Milo the wrestler used progressive resistance exercises to improve his strength. His original method consisted of lifting a calf each day until it reached its full growth and this technique provides probably the first example of progressive resistance exercises. Today, it is well documented in the literature that the size of skeletal muscle is affected by the amount of muscular activity performed. Increased work by a muscle can cause that muscle to undergo compensatory growth (hypertrophy), whereas disuse leads to wasting of the muscle (atrophy).

Weight Class Competition is the fastest growing segment in the Sports of Triathlon and Duathlon. In 2002, over 13,800 athletes competed in over 640 events worldwide. Larger athletes are now being given the opportunity to be competitive with the addition of “Clydesdales” as a category for many multi-sport races. W eight classes in recreational sports, such as running and triathlons, have been extremely popular in recent years. This is due to weight classes helping to “level the playing field.” Although very popular in North American Countries such as the United States and Canada, more recently other countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom have been growing momentum. Part of the acceptance of Weight Class Competition is the recognition of weight classes in several Olympic sports, which has helped the development of the “Clydesdale Movement”.

UC Davis will have its own Olympic contingent at the games this summer in Atlanta. Dee Vochatzer
Women's Track and Field Coach In early May, Deanne Vochatzer was focused on Aggies Jill Peckler and Jamila Demby. But Olympians Gail Devers and Gwen Torrance were never far from her mind. Vochatzer, the head coach of the UC Davis women's track and field team, will be the head coach for the U.S. women's team at this summer's centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. The workload created by coaching a young, successful Aggie team, added to handling all the details and preparations for the Atlanta Games, has at times been staggering. "It sometimes feels like a snowball coming down a mountain, and it's picking up speed," Vochatzer said between practice with the Aggies and returning phone messages to the national media. "Right now, I'm staying one step ahead of that snowball." The effort paid off, with UC Davis decisively winning the women's team title at the Northern California Athletic Conference championships. Despite having only seven seniors on the team, the Aggies won the championship by a staggering 199 points. Immediately following the NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals, Vochatzer was scheduled to head for Atlanta to prepare for the U.S. Olympic Trials, to be held June 14 to 23.

Posted 2/5/2003 2:27 AM Updated 2/5/2003 2:24 AM Olympic notes: Climbing stairway to heaven in New York By Sal Ruibal, USA TODAY When triathlete Jennifer Gutierrez became an Olympian, she didn't realize "faster, higher, stronger" would someday mean running up the Empire State Building. Gutierrez, 35, is the first Olympian to enter the event, which has been organized by the New York Runners club for the last 26 years. Cindy Moll of Indianapolis became the event's first four-time women's champion with a time of 13:06. Australia's Paul Crake won the men's race for the fifth consecutive year, bettering his course record (9:37, 2001) with a time of 9:33. Gutierrez, who placed 13th in the Sydney Summer Games in 2000, has retired from triathlon competition but says she is eager to take part in "fun events" even if they require sprinting up a skyscraper. An adaptive physical education teacher in a suburban Denver school district, Gutierrez has been training by running the steep sandstone steps at the natural Red Rocks Amphitheater in the nearby foothills.

September 28 2002 Big spender: Cathy Freeman spent $200 a week on vitamins and supplements in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics. Photo: Steve Christo A new survey has found that Olympic athletes are addicted to vitamins and minerals, writes Jacquelin Magnay. Australia's Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman spent $3480 on vitamins and supplements from health food shops in the four months leading up to the Sydney Olympic Games. Freeman's $200 a week habit, which was detailed in Victorian Supreme Court documents in her legal battle with former boyfriend and manager Nick Bideau, was not unusual among her Olympic peers. A groundbreaking survey of medications taken by athletes at the Sydney Olympics was conducted by former chairman of the Australian Sports Drug Agency and Olympic sports doctor Brian Corrigan and the director of the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory, Ray Kazlauskas. In a worrying revelation, the survey found "an unhealthy fixation amongst athletes in regards to vitamins".
