The Ancient Olympic Games

The Olympic Games were first held in 776 BC at Olympia in Ancient Greece as part of a religious festival. They were one of four game festivals held in Ancient Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympics. The Olympic Games were so important to the Ancient Greeks that wars were stopped while they were held.

for Olympic posters Ancient Olympic champions were highly revered. They received a crown made from olive leaves, were entitled to have statues made of themselves placed at Olympia, and were believed to bring their hometowns into favour with the Greek gods. It was also common for champions to have all their meals paid for at the public's expense or to get front-row seats at theatres.

Competitive Running
When Sharon Starika de Moyano talks to people about the benefits of the Feldenkrais Method , the most convincing story she tells is her own. Sharon had been competing in triathlons for four years when, in 1984, she was hit by a large truck while riding her bicycle. The collision broke her left shoulder, pelvis, femur and ankle, and destroyed muscle groups in her left leg and shoulder. She underwent nine surgeries over the course of the next year, including skin grafts, to repair the enormous damage caused by the accident. Sharon's doctors told her she would never be able to compete again, and that she probably would not be able to run. But all that changed about a year after her accident when she learned about

Houston out of the running for 2012 Olympics
By DAVID BARRON CHICAGO Houston's dream of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games was tried, weighed, scrutinized and analyzed Tuesday by the U.S. Olympic Committee's site selection task force and found wanting. Bids from New York and San Francisco will be submitted Nov. 3 to the USOC board of directors, which will pick one of the two as the 2012 U.S. candidate city. Houston and Washington, D.C., were eliminated from consideration. Tuesday's decision by the 10-member task force ends an eight-year dream of a Houston Olympic Games that was first envisioned by former City Councilman John Kelley and carried forward by the Houston 2012 Foundation, which raised $6 million in cash and services to plan and promote the city's campaign to host the Games. Houston offered visions of a compact, manageable venue plan centered at Reliant Park, capped by a bold, unique plan to revamp the Astrodome as the world's first full-scale enclosed track and field stadium. It offered the most frugal financial plan of the four contenders and the leanest budget for new construction.

New Hampshire buzzing about Frozen Four trip
Associated Press
DURHAM, N.H. Hockey excitement is building on the University of New Hampshire campus as the Wildcats prepare to play for the NCAA championship next week in St. Paul, Minn. New Hampshire, 30-6-3, plays cross-border rival Maine, 25-10-7, on Thursday afternoon in one semifinal. Minnesota, 30-8-4, and Michigan, 28-10-5, play in the other. The winners will meet in the Frozen Four on April 6. In Durham, where the team averaged 6,463 fans for home games at the 6,501-seat Whittemore Arena, big-screen televisions were being set up at the Memorial Union Building for students to watch the game on ESPN2, with the title game on ESPN. They also can watch at the Hamel Recreation Center. Plans also were being made for a campus bonfire after the championship game, and there was to be a send-off celebration and pep rally for the team Tuesday afternoon. A welcome home parade and celebration also was planned for Monday night, April 8. University and Durham police planned to be present around the campus and in town during and after the games to make sure any celebrations don't get out of control.
