Its objective is to understand the development of those critical attitudes towards Russian society and culture expressed in much of the literary criticism of the 1820s, in the programs and goals of the secret societies of the Decembrists, and finally in Chaadaev's First Philosophical Letter. NPR, KENNAN INSTITUTE ANNOUNCE RUSSIAN HISTORY AUDIO ARCHIVE
National Public Radio and the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies are pleased to announce the establishment of an audio archive of Soviet and Russian history. The archive consists of recordings dating back to the earliest years of the Soviet state. Included are the voices and speeches of key political figures, including Lenin, Kerensky, Kirov, Beria, Stalin, Gorbachev and others. Among the recorded interviews are Anna Larina (Bukharin's widow); Valentin Berezhkov, Stalin's wartime interpreter; Yelena Bonner, Sakharov's widow; and Lev Pevsner, a survivor of the Leningrad Blockade. There is also on-the-scene recorded sound of many events in Soviet history, including: the Russian and American armies meeting at the Elbe; Stalin's funeral; the August, 1991 coup against Gorbachev. The material comes from Soviet and Russian sources, from the NPR archives, from the archives of the BBC, and from individual donors. Some of the material is in Russian, some in English. The archive is intended primarily as a teaching resource to enhance the classroom study of Russian and Soviet history. Let your students hear the voices of Stalin and Beria during your lectures. Bring your students to revolutionary Russia through the voices of eyewitnesses. Researchers may also find it useful to hear the actual voices of the people they're studying.

A short overview of the Russian history
    The early beginning
Tradition says the Viking Rurik came to Russia in C.E. 862 and founded the first Russian dynasty in Novgorod. The fact is that in the course of the 9th century, Viking tribes from Scandinavia moved southward into European Russia, tracing a path along the main waterway connecting the Baltic and Black Seas. The various tribes were united by the spread of Christianity in the 10th and 11th centuries; Vladimir the Saint was converted in 988. During the 11th century, the grand dukes of Kiev held such centralizing power as existed. In 1240, Kiev was destroyed by the Mongols , and the Russian territory was split into numerous smaller dukedoms. The Mongol Empire stretched across the Asian continent and Russia was put under the suzerainty of the Khanate of the Golden Horde. The next two centuries saw the rise of Moscow as a provincial capital and centre of the Christian Orthodox Church. In the late 15th century, Duke Ivan III acquired Novgorod and Tver and threw off the Mongol yoke. Ivan IV, the Terrible (1533-84), first Muscovite tsar, is considered to have founded the Russian state. He crushed the power of rival princes and boyars (landowners), but Russia remained largely medieval until the reign of Peter the Great (1689-1725), grandson of the first Romanov tsar , Michael (1613-45). Peter made extensive reforms aimed at westernization and, through his defeat of Charles XII of Sweden at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, he extended Russia's boundaries to the west. Catherine the Great (1762-96) continued Peter's westernization program and also expanded Russian territory, acquiring the Crimea, Ukraine, and part of Poland.

W ith the present borders, the Penza region was established in 1939. It belongs to the Russian Federation (or Russia ). The region is situated on the East European plain, south-east of Moscow . It is in a temperate zone. There are diverse nature conditions in the region: forests cover about half of its north-east territory, while the south-west of the region is the typical Russian steppe. The average temperature of the air is +18.5 degrees Centigrade in the summer, and -11 degrees Centigrade in the winter. The annual precipitation is about 600 mm. The entire region is 43,300 square kilometers, which is not very much on the Russian scale. However, it is bigger than the individual territories of such European countries as Belgium Switzerland Albania and the Netherlands The city of Penza is the administrative center of the region. The distance between Penza and Moscow is 710 km along the railway. The city is located at the altitude of 235 meters on the shores of the
