    Bike Safety Lessons

Teaching kids about bicycle safety rules can be active and enjoyable. Try these ideas in your classroom, in your gymnasium, or on your school playground.
    Lesson Plan 1: Helmet Hero
    Objective:
Students will learn that bicycle helmets protect riders' heads.
Materials: bike helmet, light bulb, small clear plastic bag or plastic wrap, tape
Location: classroom, gymnasium, playground, or any place that has a hard, flat surface
Directions: Wrap the light bulb in the clear bag or plastic wrap and tape it inside the bicycle helmet. Ask students to predict what they think will happen to the bulb if you drop it when it is taped in the helmet. Drop the helmet from shoulder height onto a hard flat surface (such as a sidewalk). The light bulb should not break. Then, take the light bulb out of the helmet (but NOT out of the bag or plastic wrap!), ask students to predict what they think will happen if you drop it, then drop it from the same height. It will break (but the bag or plastic wrap will keep it contained).
NOTE: Be sure to try this experiment prior to demonstrating it to students to assure that the surface is hard enough to break the bulb.)

Playground safety Suggested Grade Level PreschoolK Based on Barney Friends 714 Play It Safe! Objectives Young children enjoy playing on swings
    http://pbskids.org/barney/pareduc/educators/lesson714.html
    Playground Safety
    Suggested Grade Level:
    Preschool-K
Based on: #714: "Play It Safe!"
    Objectives:
Young children enjoy playing on swings, slides and other equipment at the playground. It is important they learn how to safely use the equipment at an early age to avoid accidents. Children can still have fun while playing correctly and safely.
    The children will:
    • learn how to correctly (and safely) play on playground equipment
    • know how to have fun and be safe at the same time
    Skills:
    • Following directions
    • Role-playing
    • Safety awareness
    Materials:
    • School playground
    Directions:
Talk with your students about playground safety while in the classroom. Ask them to name some safety rules they may know. Ask students if they know the importance of following playground safety rules.
Take a trip to your school playground. Walk children around to each piece of equipment and discuss safety rules. Some suggestions include:
    • slide: sit up, slide feet first, one child at a time.

    Sharks and Fishes
Physical Education - Grades (elementary school and middle school)
Teachers: To reinforce the feeding habits of sharks, this activity will help students to understand the role of the school of fish as the prey and the shark as the predator. In addition, it will provide a break in the classroom routine to go outside and move around. Objective: Students should be able to demonstrate quick physical movement by successfully staying away from the "sharks". Techniques such as faking, safety in large numbers, and other trick movements should be learned and demonstrated. Materials:
    • two designated areas serving as safety zones cones (4) to mark off safety zone
Field: Teacher Background: Students should have studied the food chain and feeding habits of fish/prey and shark/predator. The teacher can review how fish stay in groups, following each other away from danger. The field is set up with two safety zones separated by the shark pit. All but two students will start in one safety zone. Either the teacher can pick two students or ask for two volunteers. The teacher may decide to choose these two students before fully explaining to the students what they will be doing. The students in the safety zone become the fish and the two students become the sharks. The sharks stay in the middle of the field in the shark pit. The object of the game is for the fish to get to the other safety zone without a shark catching them. If the shark catches a fish, that fish becomes a shark. The game begins when the teacher says "Good luck fishes-Ready-Go!"

    Hurricane Safety
Health - Grades (middle school and junior high)
Teachers: As you are teaching how hurricanes form, include this information about hurricane safety. While it is important to teach the science of hurricanes, it is also important for students to learn safety methods in order to avoid harm during a hurricane. Objective: Students will apply their knowledge of hurricanes to safety procedures in order to learn how to avoid harm in such weather conditions. Materials: Background: Hurricane facts
    • The National Weather Service can detect hurricanes days to weeks before they ever come ashore. Satellites, planes and buoys collect data needed to determine the strength and the direction of these tropical cyclones. A hurricane watch is issued when forecasters decide that the storm may reach land within 48 hours. A hurricane warning is issued when forecasters decide that the storm may reach land within 24 hours. To be categorized as a hurricane, the wind speed needs to be above 74 mph. The water along the shore can rise as high as 25 feet above normal high tide levels. This rising of the water is called the storm surge. Water carries with it a force of 1,700 pounds per cubic yard.
