Samoa If Robert Louis Stevenson had clapped eyes on Samoa a little earlier he wouldn't have dickered around in the clammy highlands for so long. The islands are so idyllic they're almost a cartoon version of a writer's hideaway - palm-fringed beaches, booming white surf, and lush rainforests wreathed in a background mist of clouds. It's enough to make a Hollywood location scout's heart go ka-boom. Then there's the beachcomber lifestyle where time is a hazy concept and life is so laid-back it's only a heartbeat away from being comatose. But the history of Samoa has not always been so relaxed. Over the years it's been visited by trading ships bringing disease, massacres and exploitation; it's been a bolt hole for the homeless riffraff of the seas - ex-whalers, escaped convicts, bawdy traders, dipsomaniac sailors, and pirates retiring from the business; it's been carved up by arrogant European powers seeking a political toehold in the Pacific arena; and it's suffered God's glory boys bringing Bibles and everlastin' perdition. That the sunny and easy-going nature of the Samoans should survive all this is a triumph of optimism over experience. Full country name: Independent State of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa)

Samoa: The Adolescent Girl
I n 1925, Margaret Mead journeyed to the South Pacific territory of American Samoa. She sought to discover whether adolescence was a universally traumatic and stressful time due to biological factors or whether the experience of adolescence depended on one's cultural upbringing. After spending about nine months observing and interviewing Samoans, as well as administering psychological tests, Mead concluded that adolescence was not a stressful time for girls in Samoa because Samoan cultural patterns were very different from those in the United States. Her findings were published in Coming of Age in Samoa (1928), a vivid, descriptive account of Samoan adolescent life that became tremendously popular. It was published in more than a dozen editions in a variety of languages and made Mead famous. One of the reasons for the popularity of the book was that Mead had revised the introduction and conclusion of her original manuscript, adding two chapters that dealt directly with the implications of her findings for child rearing in the United States.

In the olden days, the wrongdoer’s family, as a form of retribution, will present the fine mats that they had used to cover themselves with together with the presentation of other gifts that are of the highest value in the Samoan culture to the victim’s family. Nowadays, wrongdoer’s family will even offer to pay for the funeral of the victim. The ifoga is still practiced and revered as of this day in Samoa. However, the western judicial system will still carry out its course and the wrongdoer will be prosecuted with the necessary punishment applied even if and ifoga was kone and accepted. Ifoga is a system based on respect and it sill serves its traditional purpose of asking for forgiveness from a victim’s family.

The Pacific Islands
The Pacific Islands
The Pacific Islands is divided by the equator, the two halves being the North Pacific (Hawaii and the tiny Micronesian Islands including Guam, Palau and the Marshall Islands), and the South Pacific (including New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Island) with Kiribati straddling the equator. The North Pacific Islands, being north of the equator, has its summer between May and September whilst the South Pacific Islands has its summer between November and April when temperatures and humidity are higher resulting in more frequent and often heavy rainfall, except of course, for New Zealand, which is as too far south to be effected by intense heat.
This map of the Pacific Ocean with an emphasis on the main tourist destinations gives an insight into why the region is considered by many to be paradise - remote and isolated islands we know little about. The three cultural divisions in the Pacific are Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia.
