News Releases 1997 Saskatchewan Government Approves Development of McArthur River Project
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, May 5, 1997 Cameco Corporation today is pleased to announce that it has received a report by the government of Saskatchewan giving the province's approval for the development of the McArthur River uranium project, subject to certain conditions. The provincial government's decision follows a report submitted February 28, 1997 by a joint federal-provincial panel which recommended the project proceed. With today's announcement by the Saskatchewan government, the project clears one of the last hurdles to development. Approval by the federal government is still required before the project can proceed. The McArthur River deposit is the largest, high-grade orebody known in the world with reserves and resources of 416 million pounds U O at an average grade of 15%. Cameco, as operator, proposes to mine the high-grade ore using remote-controlled methods which have been endorsed by the panel. Cameco proposes to transport the ore 80 kilometres to the existing Key Lake operation for milling. The resulting mill wastes, or tailings, will be deposited in a mined-out open pit at the Key Lake operation.

Canadians deserve no less. With Friday’s announcement, the Saskatchewangovernment is downgrading the importance of nursing. .

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE en français CNA BAFFLED BY SASKATCHEWAN GOVERNMENT BACKTRACK ON EDUCATION 24 January 2000 - Ottawa ) The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), the professional voice of nursing in Canada, is baffled by the sudden changes announced Friday related to entry to practice requirements for registered nurses in the province of Saskatchewan. "Targeting education, and ultimately, the level of care patients have a right to expect across the country, is not the way to get at the root cause of a growing, national nursing shortage," says CNA President Lynda Kushnir Pekrul, adding, "It simply doesn’t add up. Reducing education requirements to offset the nursing shortage is a knee-jerk reaction to a long-standing challenge. What we must do is move quickly to address the recruitment, integration and retention of nurses into the system nationally." In the early 1990s, the challenges of health care delivery including advances in technology combined with greater patient acuity as the population ages, led CNA to spearhead the movement to provide registered nurses with an entry level of education that is in line with the needs of the public. "For CNA, says Kushnir Pekrul, the issue of entry to practice requirements was, and is, about nursing professionals providing the best patient care. Canadians deserve no less. With Friday’s announcement, the Saskatchewan government is downgrading the importance of nursing."

CFIB URGES GOVERNMENT TO LIFT THE WEIGHT OF PROPERTY TAXES
CFIB recently sent a letter calling on the Saskatchewan government to work harder to alleviate the total tax burden facing agri-business. Recent Federation OFMO (Our Farm Members' Opinion) research revealed that such a policy would receive overwhelming support from agri-business owners from all sectors of the industry—above the national average of 85.4 per cent. In addition, a media release was sent out and picked up widely across the province. CFIB has gone on record suggesting that aside from immediately curbing federal fuel taxes and user/license fees, the growing burden of profit-insensitive forms of taxation on property and education must be addressed. In fact, CFIB has found that in Saskatchewan the demand for property and education tax cuts is clearly a high priority for government action. When the level of concern over such taxes were compared across the country, next to Manitoba, Saskatchewan stood out with an 83.9 per cent response rate, far higher than the national average of 56.7 per cent

33. CFIB - Saskatchewan Government Requesting Input On Conservation Program

http://www.cfib.ca/agri/5123.asp
GOVERNMENT REQUESTING INPUT ON CONSERVATION PROGRAM In the 2000 Budget, the Saskatchewan government announced it would establish a conservation cover program to encourage the conversion of marginal farmland devoted to annual crops into perennial forage or other uses. In order to determine the design and rules for the program, the government has requested that stakeholders review the attached discussion document and complete the questionnaire. Considering CFIB has not surveyed our agri-business members on this particular issue, and as one of the groups asked to provide comment, we believe our agri-members should take the opportunity to submit their own views and concerns directly to government. The questionnaire and discussion document can be obtained at rural service centres, on-line at http://www.agr.gov.sk.ca or by phoning (306) 787-6586.

August 1, 2001 NDP Preparing to Shut Down Potato Corporation As Taxpayer's Losses Pile Up Senior NDP government officials have announced the province is considering shutting down its failing Saskatchewan Valley Potato Corporation (SVPC) at the end of the current growing season. Crown Investment Corporation Vice President Zack Douglas made the announcement during a meeting with potato producers at Outlook on Monday afternoon. Douglas also confirmed that SVPC CEO Dale Sigurdson has been replaced. The new CEO is Glen Hornick who currently serves as the Chairman of the SVPC's board of directors. Just last week the NDP Cabinet approved a $1 million increase in the Saskatchewan Valley Potato Corporation's operating line of credit. The NDP has lost more than $11 million over the past three years on its potato farming businesses in the Lake Diefenbaker area. Saskatchewan Party MLA Brad Wall said the NDP's misguided foray into the potato business has cost taxpayers million of dollars and has damaged Saskatchewan's private sector potato industry.

July 2, 2002 CTF encourages other provinces to intervene in historic Benoit v. Canada court case VICTORIA/REGINA: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today revealed that the Attorney General of Saskatchewan served notice on June 26, 2002 that it intends to appear and make submissions in the appeal of the historic Indian taxation court case Benoit v. Canada. The Saskatchewan government now joins the CTF and the provincial governments of Alberta and B.C. as official intervenors in the case. "The CTF has been involved in this case for several years, and we congratulate the Saskatchewan government for finally joining the case. Clearly a growing number of government policy makers are beginning to recognize the momentous consequences of the initial court ruling if allowed to stand," stated Tanis Fiss, Director of the CTF's Centre for Aboriginal Policy Change. The case involves a group of natives from northern Alberta, who claimed their ancestors had been promised a total exemption from taxes when they signed Treaty 8 in 1899. The Indian plaintiffs successfully sued the Canadian government in Federal Court with the Alberta government and the CTF acting as intervenors. On March 7, 2002 Justice Douglas Campbell ruled that Treaty 8 Indians and their descendants would never have to pay taxes ever again. The federal government has appealed the ruling which affects about 35,000 status Indians from northern Alberta, B.C., NWT, and Saskatchewan. The appeal will be heard in Ottawa from Nov 19-21, 2002 in the Federal Court of Appeal. The B.C. Government intervened on May 24, 2002.
