Webmaster's Note: In the 1980's, the Buffalo Narrows Celebrate Saskatchewan Committee published a local history of the Buffalo Narrows area. With the permission of the Local Buffalo Narrows council, the material from that book has been reproduced on this web site. I would like to thank them for that permission and I hope I can do justice to their fine work. Unfortunately, reproduction of the photographs contained in the book leaves something to be desired. Perhaps in the future, I may be able to obtain some copies of those original photographs, so they may enhance this web site history. Minor changes may have been made to accommodate use of this material on the Internet, but the substance of the history remains the same as the original book. Further history of the Buffalo Narrows, Deep River, Ile-A-La-Crosse area, will be added as material becomes available. January 6, 1999

History is the record of what has happened in the past, however long ago, or however recent. Reading and knowing about our past enriches the mind and tantilizes the spirit. It enables us to gain knowledge about ourselves as individuals, in order that we may successfully participate in community living. Learning about our local community history enlightens us about many things. It tells us of our origins and the origins of the area we live in. It attempts to explain how and why things came to be done the way they are. Knowing our history enables us to interpret the thoughts and comprehend the actions of men and women, who lived in the community during the past. Furthermore, we learn to appreciate the uniqueness of the different eras in time and question the change that occurred over these periods. After completing the reading of any community history we have obtained a good awareness of its past heritage and begin to realize its future potential. A historical study of people, places, and events can never be fully complete. There are always a few facts, stories and names that are forgotten or never discovered. This is due to the availability and sources of the historical data.

District Health Board History Renewal of the Saskatchewan Health system began in 1992. Health districts were established through a community development process in which local residents developed the health district boundaries. The number and size of health districts was based on location of communities, population distribution, geographic barriers, trading and commuting patterns, location of current health facilities and population health status. Twenty-nine health districts and boards were established during the period of February 1992 to August 1993. Three health districts were added later. The Athabasca Health Authority in northern Saskatchewan was established in January of 1999 to complete the current structure for the entire province. In April 1995, Saskatchewan Health transferred the delivery of community-based services such as public, mental, community health and addictions to district health boards. As part of this process, service areas comprising groups of districts were established to provide these and other services on a regional basis. This allows for a more complete range of health services than smaller districts could provide by themselves. District health boards are responsible for planning, managing and delivering health services to their district residents. Major services of responsibility are:

History The first settlers to arrive in the area (which is now Naicam) were predominantly Scandinavian. They soon transformed the rich virgin bush land into the high yielding farm land that it is today. In 1918, Mrs. Marius Knutson sold her land to the CPR to form a town site. The hamlet of Naicam received its name from two CPR officials - Naismith and Cameron. They used the first three letters of each name to form "Naicam" Incorporated as a village in 1921, shortly after the arrival of the CPR, Naicam progressed to the extent that it was incorporated into a town in 1954. Population that year was 523 and has since increased to the current figure of 950. Naicam is a progressive and friendly community which serves an area of about 5,000 residents within a 20 to 25 km radius. The town has prospered along with the Agricultural Industry that looks to it for supplies and services. An Early History of Golf in Canada
It should come as no surprise to find that the game of golf in Canada owes its establishment to the massive immigration of Scots during the 19th Century. The game had been played in Scotland for well over 300 years by the time the word "golf" is first found in print in Canada. That was 1826, when the Montreal Herald ran a notice "To Scotsmen A few true sons of Scotia, eager to perpetuate the remembrance of her Customs have fixed upon the 25th December and the 1st January, for going to the Priests' Farm, to PLAY AT GOLF. Such of their Countrymen as choose to join them, will meet them before TEN O'Clock, A.M., at D. M'Arthur's INN, Hay-Market. Steps have been taken to have CLUBS provided." Unfortunately, there is no record following up this invitation, so we may never know how many, if any, took up the offer. Likewise, there are many theories that golf was played earlier than 1826, but no proof has been found as unequivocal as this invitation. The next time golf made it into print was 1854, when a young man from a merchant vessel came ashore at Quebec to practice his swing on the Plains of Abraham. That it was reported certainly indicates this was still unusual behaviour. While there may have been avid closet golfers throughout the young dominion, it undoubtedly was an uncommon occurrence.

Because of insufficient funds, selected artists toured on an individual basis as part of "Saskatchewan Artists on Tour" rather than as part of a touring show. The program continued in this manner for several years with the Talent Hunt concluding in a gala stage show in the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts judged by such luminaries in the entertainment world as Dinah Christie, Norman MacLaren and Tommy Banks. Saskatchewan Express got on track in 1980, as a program to Celebrate Saskatchewan, the 75th anniversary of the province. The group was known as "Saskatchewan’s Greatest Little Travelling Birthday Party". Once again in 1981 and 1982 insufficient funds made a tour impossible. In 1983, Saskatchewan Lotteries was asked to provide a portion of the funding. The Lotteries have been a major supporter each year since. The group was named "
