History: The history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia dates back to about 1747 when the ruler of the central Arabian Peninsula, Muhammad Bin Saud, formed an alliance with the Muslim scholar and reformer Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhab, a partnership that led to the founding of the modern state.
The Al-Saud family ruled much of the Arabian Peninsula throughout the 19th century. In 1902, Abdul Aziz Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud succeeded in recapturing Riyadh from the Al-Rashid and in the following thirty years united the numerous and disparate tribes into one nation.
The foundation of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took place on September 23, 1932, a day that is commemorated as National Day.

Restrictions Geography Saudi Arabia is a vast stretch of land between the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea. Covering approximately 80% (2,250,000 square kilometers) of the Arabian Peninsula, the country contains massive deserts, mountains, deep valleys, forests and a wealth of resources. The Arabian Peninsula lies at the crossroads of three continents: Asia, Africa, and Europe. The local population is approximately 12 million. Jeddah (Western Province), Riyadh (Central Province), and Dhahran/Dammam (Eastern Province) are the major population centers of the Kingdom. All three are connected by excellent roads and frequent Saudia Airline flights. Also, there is a rail service between Dhahran/Dammam and Riyadh. Residents living in the Dhahran/Dammam area have easy access to the Saudi/Bahraini Causeway (a bridge to the island of Bahrain) which offers the opportunity for rest and relaxation in a Western style atmosphere.

Saudi Arabia
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year. A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns.
