Saudi Arabia Enters the 21st Century Click here to see Reports Project Introduction CSIS is undertaking a new project to examine the trends shaping the future of Saudi Arabia and its impact on the stability of the Gulf. This project is supported by the Smith Richardson Foundation and builds on the work done for the CSIS Strategic Energy Initiative, the CSIS Net Assessment of the Middle East, and the Gulf in Transition Project. It is being conducted in conjunction with a separate - but closely related study called the Middle East Energy and Security Project. The project is being conducted by Anthony H. Cordesman, the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy, It uses a net assessment approach that looks at all of the major factors affecting Saudi Arabia's strategic, political, economic, and military position and future implications of current trends. It is examining the internal stability and security of Saudi Arabia, social and demographic trends, and the problem of Islamic extremism. It is also examining the changes taking place in the Saudi economy and petroleum industries, the problems of Saudisation, changes in export and trade patterns, and Saudi Arabia's new emphasis on foreign investment.

Country Profile

Flag of Saudi Arabia Background:
In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year.
A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns.

Tourism is the new buzzword in Saudi Arabia. It has triggered excitement for both Saudis and foreigners as business ventures are explored, new programs initiated and vast sums invested in the industry to promote tourism for Saudis and encourage non-Saudis to visit the Kingdom.
While Saudi Arabia has been a travel destination for centuries, with millions of people visiting the Kingdom each year from around the world, the vast majority of visitors have historically been Muslims who undertake the pilgrimage to the Holy Mosque in Makkah as part of the Hajj or the Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage. In recent decades, millions have visited the Kingdom on business as the country has undergone dramatic development. Citizens from the other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have also been traveling to the Kingdom in growing numbers in recent years to visit the various vacation sites and tourist attractions.
Secretary-General of the Supreme Commission for Tourism Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz
While the Kingdom already has a tourism infrastructure in the form of modern hotels and travel facilities, the government early last year launched a major effort to expand these facilities and promote tourism for Saudis and citizens from fellow GCC states. Under the new program, moreover, visitors from all over the world can now see the wonders of Saudi Arabia as part of tour groups.

History and Government
History:
Sheikh Hamad appointed a new government with one of his sons as deputy and heir apparent and his brother as chief minister. A woman was appointed to a ministerial post (Under-Secretary for Education and Culture) for the first time. Since then, the Emir has embarked on a very gradual process of democratisation; municipal elections were held for the first time in 1999, and plans are in hand for an elected national parliament.
Government: The Al-Thani family rules Qatar as an absolute monarchy without an independent legislature or political parties. Executive power is partially devolved to a Council of Ministers appointed by the Emir who is both head of state and prime minister. An advisory council with 30 appointees was created in 1972. There is an advisory council with limited powers to request information from the government and debate forthcoming legislation (but not to change or block it). The Emir plans a gradual process of democratisation (see above).

in collaboration with the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is rich in ancient inscriptions. They form a priceless resource for the study of the region's cultural and linguistic heritage. Throughout the country, inscriptions were etched, engraved, pecked, or even sometimes carved in bas-relief on stones or on the rock-faces of cliffs and hills. The scribe placing a text into stone (or the person commissioning that scribe) is very likely selecting the medium for its relative permanence, and usually is also selecting the location where the stone is found or placed. The difficulty of inscribing the text implies that this medium is usually reserved for matters that are of great (even, literally, monumental) importance. Epigraphy is the study of such texts, the science of deciphering and interpreting them. This "virtual exhibition" presents some examples of the Epigraphy Collections of the National Museum of Saudi Arabia, many published here for the first time. The exhibition is presented as the first product of an international partnership between the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC, USA) and the National Museum of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). Thanks to the much-appreciated help of the project's
