He established an absolute monarchy, which gained legitimacy from an 18th century alliance between the Al Saud family and the Wahhabi sect of Islam. Muhammed bin Abd al-Wahhab, the founder of Wahhabism, preached a strict adherence to the principles of sharia (Islamic law). His relationship with a local chieftain of the Al Saud family contributed to the strengthening and endurance of both the Wahhabis' religious authority, and the Al Sauds' political authority. Saudi Arabia and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1933. Saudi Arabia and Standard Oil sign concession agreement The agreement was modified several times over the years. In 1950, Saudi Arabia and Aramco agreed to a 50-50 profit-sharing arrangement, and a series of agreements between 1973 and 1980 resulted in the Saudis' regaining full control of the company. In 1988, King Fahd issued a royal decree establishing the Saudi Arabian Oil Company, known as Saudi Aramco, to replace Aramco. Saudi Arabia gains strategic importance during World War II Although Saudi Arabia officially maintained neutrality through most of the war, the U.S. began to court the kingdom as it realized the strategic importance of Saudi oil reserves. In 1943, President Franklin Roosevelt made Saudi Arabia eligible for Lend-Lease assistance by declaring the defense of Saudi Arabia of vital interest to the U.S. In 1945, King Abdel Aziz and President Roosevelt cemented the tacit oil-for-security relationship when they met aboard the USS Quincy in the Suez Canal.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today urged Saudi leaders to take action to put an end to this campaign of incitement, saying that it contributes to deep-seated anti-Western sentiments, especially among youth in a land that produced 15 of the 19 hijackers. ADL's Open Letter to the Leaders of Saudi Arabia characterized the Saudi image campaign as "a failure" and called on religious and political leaders in Saudi Arabia to "take the actions necessary to end the virulent campaign of anti-Semitism that runs through your educational system and government-controlled media." Released in conjunction with a new ADL report citing dozens of instances since the 9/11 terrorist attacks where the Saudi media has printed hateful anti-American and anti-Semitic statements, ADL's Open Letter stated, in part:

Saudi Arabia History Except for a few major cities and oases, the harsh climate historically prevented much settlement of the Arabian Peninsula. People of various cultures have lived there over a span of more than 5,000 years. The Dilmun culture, along the Gulf coast, was contemporaneous with the Sumerians and ancient Egyptians, and most of the empires of the ancient world traded with the states of the peninsula. The Saudi state began in central Arabia in about 1750. A local ruler, Muhammad bin Saud, joined forces with an Islamic reformer, Muhammad Abd Al-Wahhab, to create a new political entity. Over the next 150 years, the fortunes of the Saud family rose and fell several times as Saudi rulers contended with Egypt, the Ottoman Turks, and other Arabian families for control on the peninsula. The modern Saudi state was founded by the late King Abd Al-Aziz Al-Saud (known internationally as Ibn Saud). In 1902, Abd Al-Aziz recaptured Riyadh, the Al-Saud dynasty's ancestral capital, from the rival Al-Rashid family. Continuing his conquests, Abd Al-Aziz subdued Al-Hasa, the rest of Nejd, and the Hijaz between 1913 and 1926. In 1932, these regions were unified as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Boundaries with Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait were established by a series of treaties negotiated in the 1920s, with two "neutral zones" one with Iraq and the other with Kuwait created. The Saudi-Kuwaiti neutral zone was administratively partitioned in 1971, with each state continuing to share the petroleum resources of the former zone equally. Tentative agreement on the partition of the Saudi-Iraqi neutral zone was reached in 1981, and partition was finalized by 1983. The country's southern boundary with Yemen was partially defined by the 1934 Treaty of Taif, which ended a brief border war between the two states. It remains undefined in many areas. The border between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates was agreed upon in 1974. Boundary differences with Qatar remained unresolved.
