Business Fraud Prevention
Tips for businesses to protect themselves against Internet fraud. Credit Card Scams Some people buying on the Internet are not honest. The most common method is to use a stolen credit card. Savvy business owners suggested the following tips.
  • Always be tactful with your customers as they may have accidently given you an incorrect digit.
  • If you are shipping to a different address than the credit card billing address, always do additional checking.
  • If the order is greater than $100, go to the credit card bank and have them call the card holder to see if they did indeed order.
  • Be extra careful if sending to Chicago IL, New York City NY, Jacksonville FL, Canada (especially Eastern Canada), Bulgaria, Nigeria and Romania.
  • Always manually check orders from free email accounts such as hotmail.com.
  • Waiting 24 hours after an order is placed to contact your authorization service can help. Stolen credit cards are often reported within 24 hours.
  • In some cases, crooks are giving the correct address and then intercepting the package at the package destination.

    How to Protect Your Business
    Against Schemes, Scams and Fraud
Every year businesses lose millions of dollars to con games and fast-talking promoters through a wide variety of different schemes. But, businesses can protect themselves if they are constantly wary of schemers. Use common sense in all your business dealings. Clearly, not all strange sales or promotions represent schemes against businesses, but ask questions of unfamiliar service or sales personnel, telephone promoters or charity appeals. A business, which gathers all the facts, should be able to separate the scheme from the honest transaction. If you are in doubt about a business proposition, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) provides the following suggestions:
    • Refuse to make commitments with unknown persons, especially over the telephone. Ask that all advertising propositions, charitable appeals, requests for biographical information, and sales pitches of any type be made in writing.
    • When dealing with publications, insist on verifiable circulation figures, details of publication dates, name(s) of publishers, number of paid subscribers, and sample copies.
    • Institute strict controls in the accounting department. The handling of invoices, for example, should be centralized and authorization should be closely checked.

Fraud is a growth industry. You need to be smart when it comes to protecting your assets, whether your bank account or your credit rating. Here are a few common sense rules for you to follow to help protect yourself from fraud:
    • Give your Social Security number out only when absolutely necessary. Make sure you know why someone wants your personal information. Never give out your Social Security number to a cold caller. Be sure to f ind out how your personal information will be used and if it will be shared. Ask if you have a choice about the use of your information and ask to use identifiers other than a Social Security number whenever possible. Follow up with the creditor if a bill does not arrive on time. Pay attention to your billing cycles. Minimize the identification information you carry and never carry more credit cards than you actually need.

Scams and fraud have weaved their way into everyday lives
    BY CATHERINE FITZPATRICK
    Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Trust me. Give me your credit card number, the keys to your apartment, your life savings. Let me hold your baby a moment. Smooth as honey, believable as a best friend, con artists scam thousands of victims each year, hapless "marks" who have no idea they're being manipulated by masters, much less how. By one author's tally, people lie an average of 200 times a day. Mostly, it's no big deal. But for the liar who has perfected the art of fake self-portraits, today's laser-paced, stress-soaked world is the perfect canvas. "I am convinced most people don't realize the impact fraud has on their daily lives, or how easy we've made it for others to deceive us," said retired Milwaukee police Detective Dennis Marlock, an expert in fraud and con investigations. "It is, without a doubt, the No. 1 crime in America in terms of frequency." Those who spin elaborate webs of deceit rake in billions each year. But sometimes the victim's loss is far more dear than money.

    We Fight the Nigerian Scam
    The Nigerian Scam Defined
A Five Billion US$ (as of 1996, much more now) worldwide Scam which has run since the early 1980's under Successive Governments of Nigeria. It is also referred to as "Advance Fee Fraud", "419 Fraud" (Four-One-Nine) after the relevant section of the Criminal Code of Nigeria, and "The Nigerian Connection" (mostly in Europe). However, it is usually called plain old "419" even by the Nigerians themselves. The Scam operates as follows: the target receives an unsolicited fax, email, or letter concerning Nigeria containing either a money laundering or other illegal proposal OR you may receive a Legal and Legitimate business proposal by normal means . Common variations on the Scam include "overinvoiced" or "double invoiced" oil or other supply and service contracts where your Bad Guys want to get the overage out of Nigeria; crude oil and other commodity deals; a "bequest" left you in a will; and "money cleaning" where your Bad Guy has a lot of currency that needs to be "chemically cleaned" before it can be used and he needs the cost of the chemicals. Or the victim will just be stiffed on a legitimate goods or services contract...the variations are very creative and virtually endless. At some point, the victim is asked to pay up front an Advance Fee of some sort, be it an "Advance Fee", "Transfer Tax", "Performance Bond", or to extend credit, grant COD privileges, whatever. If the victim pays the Fee, there are many "Complications" which require still more advance payments until the victim either quits, runs out of money, or both. If the victim extends credit etc. he may also pay such fees ("nerfund" etc.), and then he is stiffed with NO Effective Recourse.
