A Very Incomplete List of of Wonderful Scandinavian Literature
The following are primarily Swedish novels that I have read in Swedish or in English as well as a few other Scandinavian novels I think worthy of recommending to the general public.
Frans G. Bengtsson The Longships (out of print) Karin Blixen (Isak Dinesen) yes, this is the Danish author played by Meryl Streep in Out of Africa. Her voice is hauntingly unique. Her tales, influenced by German Romanticism and its dreamy, melancholic quality and extremes of emotion and idealism. Her characters are haunted by ghosts of their past or trapped by their own personal habits or cultural norms to fully profit from or enjoy life fully. These collections of short tales or novellas contain incredibly memorable characters and entertaining situations, like fairy tales for grown-ups. My favorite tales are "Babette's Feast" (great movie, too!!) about a French chef who prepares a sumptuous feast for an ascetic pietistic community in remote Denmark and another about a gentlewoman and her servant who take turns trading places on holiday, because neither can appear in public without the other. Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass ISBN: 0679724753 Seven Gothic Tales ISBN: 0679736417 Karin Boye is best known for her poetry, but her futuristic novel

    Spring only Latest syllabus (pdf)
    Instructor: Lise Lotte Frederiksen
    Objectives
The course aims at answering the questions: Does Scandinavian literature express a special Scandinavian character and world view? If so, what is this identity? And how is it expressed? Applying different analytical approaches, the writers, many of whom are Nobel Prize winners, will be related to each other, as we search for answers through examination of literary themes and styles. Content Beginning with Ibsen, Bang, Strindberg, and Jens Peter Jacobsen, we will take a critical look at the philosophical, cultural and aesthetic roots of modern Scandinavian literature. We will trace the most prolific themes and examine their development. Lectures, group discussions, and talks will link Scandinavia to literary developments in Europe and the USA. Emphasis will be put on developing the pleasure of reading as well as on cultivating a critical approach to literary theory. Field Study A visit to Karen Blixen's childhood home, Rungstedlund. In addition, the class will view movies based on works read in the course.

    NORWEGIAN LITERATURE
    The Age of Wergeland.
After 1814 a new, exciting, and difficult age began for Norway: an opportunity seemed to be offered to develop an independent Norwegian culture and way of life, but there were deep differences of opinion as to how this could best be achieved. A poet and critic, Johan Sebastien Welhaven was chief representative of those who insisted that the existing Danish element in the culture should not be neglected. Henrik Wergeland was a spokesman for those whose nationalistic pride led them, on the other hand, to demand a complete break with Denmark. Welhaven stood for a coolly intellectual approach, for restraint and control, and for conscious artistry, as his own sonnet cycle Norges daemring (1834; "The Dawn of Norway") exemplifies. Wergeland was more passionate and revolutionary, and his enormous epic, Skabelsen, mennesket og messias (1830; "Creation, Humanity and Messiah"), typified the spirit he admired.
Wergeland dominated the age as poet, orator, and social reformer, and the clash between him and Welhaven and between the two factions associated with themthe "patriots" and the "intelligentsia"began an ideological conflict that has continued to persist in modified forms.
