Scandinavian Literature in Translation
I don't read much "capital 'L' Literature". I prefer Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Biographies and History. Most of what I read is looked on as trash by the literati. However, I read some "literature" when I was in college and pick some up every once in a while. Lately, I found myself craving a glance into Scandinavian society that was not to be afforded by the usual travel guidebooks. Progressives often complain of the Eurocentricity of our society and school system. Actually, it's even worse than that. If you go into any decent bookstore, you can find books on England, Germany, France and Russia/U.S.S.R. (thanks to the Cold War). For certain periods, you can find books on Italy or Spain. That's about it. It's much harder to find books on other European cultures. Those in search of Scandinavian history or literature in translation from Scandinavia will be looking quite a while (if they don't live in Minnesota). Hej! Welcome to the "hemsida" of the Scandinavian section of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Swedish and many other courses related to Scandinavia which cover areas such as Vikings, Scandinavian literature, film, society and culture are offered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign each semester. Here follows an overview of the Scandinavian program. V lkommen!
Swedish and other Scandinavian languages
The Scandinavian languages, spoken primarily in the respective Nordic countries, include Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese. Like English and German, they belong to the group of languages called Germanic that share a linguistic ancestor and many everyday words. Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian in their standard forms are mutually intelligible; that is, a person who knows one of the languages can read and understand the others with little difficulty. Language students benefit from this fact, since with just a bit of extra effort they can acquire (at least passively) two more languages "for free." (Finnish belongs to an unrelated language group and is not classified as a Scandinavian language, though about six percent of the Finnish population has Swedish as its native tongue and all Finns study Swedish in school.) Moreover, the Scandinavian languages all have quite simple grammatical structures. To give just one example, verbs do not change their form within a
