Include a self-addressed stamped envelope when you request application forms by mail. If you can get a form or routine information by telephone or on the web, do so, and save valuable time.
Read the Fine Print
As soon as you receive the application, read the instructions carefully. Pay attention to the information required. If the application requires a transcript from all schools you have attended, request this information as soon as possible. After a few weeks have passed, call the schools to be sure that the transcripts have been sent to the proper addresses. If by chance you have to hand-deliver a transcript, do not tamper with the seal; the transcript may not be accepted if you do.
The Reasons Most Applications Come With a Phone Number
If you find that some instructions on an application are unclear, seek advice either from the scholarship provider, high school guidance counselor or a financial aid advisor. Don’t be afraid to call the scholarship provider! Undoubtedly, you’re one of many asking the same question!

When applying for a scholarship you will often need to write a letter directly to the administrator to request more information, an application form, or simply tell them a bit about yourself. This is a great opportunity to show the administrator why you are the best candidate for their scholarship. Take some time to make this letter as clear, concise and informative as possible.
Before you start your letter, compile a list of all the activities you have taken an interest in, been involved with, lead or have been a member of. The following list will help you develop your ideas and create the most complete listing possible:
  • Awards: Were you the student of the month, student of the year? Did you receive an award for your extra-curricular activities?
  • Clubs: What clubs at school were you involved in? Were you in any school plays? Did you write for the school paper or yearbook? Were you involved with a religious youth group?
  • Co-op Jobs: Where did you work? What did you do? What did you learn?

69. Winning Scholarships, Chapter 4: Applying For Awards
I have seen too many great students and potential winners talk themselvesout of applying. scholarships mean both fame and money. Get your share.
http://www.utpress.utoronto.ca/howell/chap04.html
Chapter 4
Applying for awards
In this chapter:
Dos and Don'ts
Requesting letters of recommendation
Sample questions
Interviews ... Personal student record Once you have decided to apply for a scholarship the real work begins. Since you get only one chance to make a first impression, it is critical that you spend some time on your application. You will find the personal student record in this chapter useful for organizing all your information. Fill out the form carefully and then let your parents and your scholarship coach take a look at it to be sure that you haven't missed anything. Nearly all of the universities and most of the colleges in Ontario have prestigious scholarships that require special attention. Application forms for these are sent out to high school principals or guidance departments each year with the instruction that only one candidate should be chosen from each school. The reason for this limitation is to ensure that only the very best students will be considered for these awards. Most of the big scholarships have some kind of set application procedure and a deadline. If you have done some research you should know the scholarships for which you are eligible. Your next move is to work through the requirements carefully. Resist the temptation to scribble down one copy and send it off. If this is your attitude, you might as well not bother wasting the postage. This is especially true if you have been asked to be the candidate for your school. If you don't really want to put in the time, then decline the honour and let someone else apply for the scholarship. I get more than a little angry when I ask a student to represent the school and then am told too late that he or she wasn't really interested and didn't complete the application. Not only does that attitude let the school down, it selfishly wastes an opportunity that could have gone to someone else.

    Building relationships
    Making connections
Self-reflection is the first step in the application process. Ask yourself, "What am I looking for?" and "What do I want to do?", and think about your answers in ideal terms. "What is the connection between my academic work and my interests outside of classes?" Such questions are fundamental yet too often forgotten. Perhaps you already have found your life's passion, but if you are like most people, you are taking the courses and projects that you like, in a major that you hope will help you to find a good job, and thinking vaguely about a career that will bring you wealth and happiness. So, ask yourself questions like these:
    • When have I been so immersed in what I was doing that time seemed to vanish?

When should I begin applying for scholarships?
Most scholarship applications are targeted at high school seniors and are available in high school guidance offices and college admissions offices in the Fall of each year. Every application will have an application deadline which is FINAL (this is important)! Therefore, trying to apply for scholarships before the student's senior year is usually premature. However, there are some exceptions. Every student who is interested in scholarship assistance should stay in touch with their high school guidance counselor. There are some scholarship contests that are open to students of all ages. At the beginning of each year, it's a good idea to ask your counselor about scholarship opportunities that you may be eligible for.
