Internet Resources TRANSITION FROM SCHOOL TO WORK During the State fiscal year 2001, 789 individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 had active cases open with DVR. These individuals, many of whom require transitional services while they prepare to move from school to work, will be better prepared to work after graduation because of the cooperative working relationship between DVR and the local school districts. Community Transition Teams continue to function in Cheyenne, Sheridan, Evanston, Laramie, Gillette, and Casper. Each team includes adult service providers, DVR counselors and local school districts who identify and plan to meet needs of the transitioning students in their communities. Successful employment opportunities mean that students will have a livable wage with benefits. DVR and the Wyoming Department of Education are working together cooperatively within local communities. There is a cooperative agreement between the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the DVR Administrator.

Making the Transition from the World of School into the World of Work Temple Grandin, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado, 80523, U.S.A. During my travels to many autism conferences I have observed many sad cases of people with autism who have successfully completed high school or college but have been unable to make the transition into the world of work. Some have become perpetual students because they thrive on the intellectual stimulation of college. For many able people with autism college years were their happiest (Szatmari et al., 1989). I would like to stress the importance of a gradual transition from an educational setting into a career. I made the transition gradually. My present career of designing livestock facilities is based on an old childhood fixation. I used that fixation to motivate me to become an expert on cattle handling. Equipment I have designed is in all the major meat plants. I have also stimulated the meat industry to recognize the importance of humane treatment of livestock. While I was in college I started visiting local feedlots and meat packing plants. This enabled me to learn about the industry. Many successful people with autism have turned an old fixation into the basis of a career. I was lucky to find Tom Rohrer, the manager of the local Swift Meat Packing plant, and Ted Gilbert, the Manager of the Red River Feedlot (John Wayne's feedlot). They allowed me to visit their operations every week. They recognized my talents and tolerated my eccentricities. These people served as important mentors. Educators who work with autistic students need to find these people in the business community. I finished up at Arizona State University with a Master's Thesis on cattle handling and chute design. At the same time I did some freelance writing for the Arizona Farmer Ranchman Magazine. This enabled me to further learn about the livestock industry and develop expertise.

School to Work Program Report Oregon Building Congress School to Work Committee by Dick O'Connor In January 1999, the Oregon Building Congress reorganized itself and created a School to Work Committee: 1) to promote the construction industry to school teachers and students, including women and minorities; 2) to help educators develop more examples of applied curriculum to improve students' qualifications in becoming apprentices; and to improve the quality of work ethic among today's students. I was asked by the OBC Board of Directors to assume the chairmanship of the School to Work Committee and to bring educators together with apprenticeship trainers and industry contractors to promote the three goals of the Committee. Through an initial series of meetings, the Committee has developed several programmatic objectives. I then suggested to Ralph that it would be great if we could get him in from of a group of high school math teachers and have him show them how trig is used to build things. He said "Sure, let's do it!" He then directed me to Harold Branstetter, Apprenticeship Director at the Carpenters Union, and to Ken Fry of the Electrical Union. Ken directed me to Fred Vogel, a gifted apprenticeship trainer and a Benson High School electrical instructor. As I talked with these men I realized that a good amount of geometry is done by carpenters, especially the Pythagorean theorem, and that electrical uses a fair amount of algebra. We then formulated a presentation based on these three math disciplines and did our first presentation at the Work Now and In The Future Conference.
