College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Undergraduate Programs
The Psychology program at San Francisco State University includes undergraduate major and minor programs and graduate degrees with six areas of specialization. The program examines the many approaches to human behavior within a cultural context, ranging from the philosophical to the biological. The faculty's broad expertise enables students to study a variety of theoretical and research issues and to experience community field placements.
What is Unique about the Psychology Program at SFSU?
Our location in San Francisco provides a unique environment for the study of human behavior. In addition to significant faculty involvement in the urban scene, more than half of our Psychology majors work while they go to school. To maximize availability of our courses to working students, the department offers classes throughout the day and early evening. Our program serves a large and diverse student body. Many students are transfers from community colleges; others are returning to academic training after several years in the workplace. Our students pursue degrees in Psychology for four primary reasons. First, the program satisfies undergraduate requirements for graduate programs. Second, the program provides an excellent foundation for students planning to pursue advanced study in such areas as business, medicine, and law. Third, the program meets certain vocational needs of students who intend to enter directly into the job market. Fourth, the coursework provides information relevant to students' interests in personal growth and in general psychological principles.
