Dean's Message
Here in the Graduate Psychology Program at New College of California we are pleased to offer a degree program in clinical psychology that is innovative as well as one of the best in the country. We believe that today in North America psychology is in crisis. Therefore, our approach to psychology differs from that taken by mainstream academic thought. As a result, our program trains clinicians who will remain community activists.
Knowledge can either liberate us or alienate us. Our Psychology Program provides our s tudents with knowledge of the human mind as well as its potential for helping individuals change themselves and the world. Because we believe that the epistemology and methodology of psychology should be embedded in the historical and social foundations of individual experience, our students observe and analyze this close relationship between the individual and the socio-historical in current conditions. They learn vital lessons that they c an apply in their everyday practice as therapists in training and as agents of social change.
In both our Social Clinical and Feminist Clinical concentrations, we start from the understanding that the mind does not grow in a vacuum, that an individual’s intrapsychic activities and their interpersonal experiences are profoundly affected by their ethnic and class background. Effective psychotherapy and mental health work in a pluralistic society depend heavily on such understandings.

The American Psychological Association (APA)-approved School Psychology Program at The University of Texas at Austin prepares PhD psychologists in accord with the scientist-practitioner model that emphasizes the importance of theoretical and empirical derivations and their utilization in psychological practice. Training includes strong preparation in the academic foundations of psychology, in the research skills essential to the contribution of new knowledge, and in the competent and ethical professional practice of psychology. In the broadest sense, the Program strives to bring the best of the discipline and practice of psychology to understanding and enhancing the development of children. The Program has a comprehensive and interdisciplinary perspective, is committed to excellence, was the first program in school psychology to be accredited by APA, and is acknowledged as an exemplary model of training in school psychology. This Program represents a nontraditional concept of school psychology that shifts the emphasis from a case study model, and traditional ways of functioning, to one that views the child and adolescent within a dynamic school, family, and community context. The aim of the Program is to prepare psychologists who can use behavioral sciences knowledge and professional skills to enhance opportunities for improved learning, behavior, and mental health for normal, gifted, and handicapped children and adolescents. In addition, students are also prepared to assume psychological, research, and teaching responsibilities in other applied settings and in institutions of higher education.
