In addition to the many off-the-shelf software tools described on these pages for numerical and statistical analysis, data acquisition, and visualization, scientists have also depended on basic OS building blocks such as shells, common UNIX applications, scripting languages, and compilers to build specialized software for their work. To do this, the basic facilities of a UNIX operating system are often used. Mac OS X , being a full-fledged UNIX OS, has within its Darwin core all the familiar facilities that scientists have been using on other UNIX operating systems. In the future, it is expected that many of these popular open source tools, including the GNU tools, will be ported to Mac OS X, and there are also many currently available. The flexibility and power of a UNIX OS, with its capabilities for clustering and compute farms, combined with a great array of development tools and advanced hardware will very likely mean that the Macintosh is the only computer you will ever need.
