digital library "A managed environment of multimedia materials in digital form, designed for the benefit of its user population, structured to facilitate access to its contents, and equipped with aids to navigate the global network ... with users and holdings totally distributed, but managed as a coherent whole." Mel Collier, International Symposium on Research,
Development, and Practice in Digital Libraries 1997
Building on work supported under the multi-agency Digital Libraries Initiative, this program aims to establish a national digital library that will constitute an online network of learning environments and resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. In FY2003, the program will accept proposals in three tracks: (1) Collections projects are expected to aggregate and manage a subset of the library's content within a coherent theme or specialty. Program is funded in part by theNSF and designed for the average student in grades 4 through 9, regardlessof previous exposure to science. Over half of the students are girls. Studentsreceive packets of hands-on experiments, and send their reports to an assignedvolunteer scientist who provides encouraging feedback to develop and maintainthe students' interest in science. Through pen-pal correspondence, studentsexperience scientists as real people and as role models. Almost half ofthe volunteer scientist are women.

Taking a hint from nature, post-doctoral research associate Grazyna Sroga is creating a new generation of nanoscale devices. These microscopic structures, created from DNA and related proteins, may someday power electricity, deliver drugs, or boost computer memory. Her research, conducted under the direction of biochemist Jonathan Dordick, was presented at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society. Waste Management
Combing through reams of IRS documentation, Mark Nelson and undergrads Taylor Smith '03 and Diana Thomas '03 are finding solutions to why hugely expensive IT projects, such as those implemented by the IRS, fail up to 70 percent of the time. What they've found could cut government waste, and potentially save taxpayers money.
Material World

A five-year $3.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to Rensselaer will establish a first-of-its-kind global laboratory that expects to do for materials science what the Human Genome Project did for biotechnology. The International Materials Institute for Materials Informatics and Combinatorial Materials Science will create radically new and multifunctional materials engineered from the atomic scale.

HOW TO PROMOTE THE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT OF FEMALES AND MINORITIES
Wendy Schwartz
Today, it is necessary to know advanced science, mathematics, and technology to have a high-paying and satisfying career. But, unfortunately, some minority and female students have not been given the help they need to enroll and succeed in these classes in elementary and high school. Now, though, there are a variety of education policies and programs that do give these students the extra attention they need. Parents can increase the success of these programs by encouraging your children in many important ways.
AT HOME
Parents can help children develop an interest in science and mathematics by doing these things:
  • Find and point out professional female and minority role models working in science, technology, and math, so your children will believe that they, too, can have these careers. Stress that your children should set their sights high, and not put limits on themselves:

A Closer Look
Over $150 Million to State Libraries Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Museum Initiative ... How to Subscribe/Unsubscribe 1. A Message from Director Martin
This week we celebrate National Library Week. On Monday, April 6, First Lady Laura Bush hosted local librarians at the White House to celebrate the work of librarians, libraries, and library volunteers. She said in a letter to Friends and Fellow Booklovers , "As important as it is to encourage library use, even more important is the need to encourage public and private support of our nation's libraries. Every day across our country, dedicated volunteers give their time and resources to their local public and school libraries. Without this priceless help, libraries could not thrive." She also noted that, "the support of President Bush and this administration is most clearly demonstrated by the increased funding that the Institute of Museum and Library Services has received in the past two years and the even larger increases he has requested in the budget for 2004. With Congressional cooperation, the 2004 budget will double the funding for recruiting and educating the next generation of librarians." Now, more than ever, libraries have a critical role in providing real public value. Today's libraries are much more than collections or even places. They are services, essential fluid resources that support the journey of lifelong learning. Libraries are one of the most reliable institutions where the daily flood of information can be mediated and navigated. These institutions, and the services they provide, attempt to meet the needs of people of all ages, from all walks of life and diverse cultural backgrounds and in a variety of languages. Today they connect to people outside the institution's walls wherever the users are, be it at home, school, or work.
