Speaker Biography - Ian Lester
Ian's academic background is in Natural Sciences and Business Administration. He has worked most of his career in marketing and business development in food and food ingredients, for international companies. For the five years before joining IFR, he worked in France for Rhone Poulenc, later Rhodia. Ian joined IFR 18 months ago as its first Business Development Manager.
Abstract - The Food and Health Network Mr Lester explained that IFR had a responsibility to communicate its research findings to three key stakeholders: industry, Government and the consumer. For many years it had been said that although there was excellence within British science, there was also limited industrial exploitation with the consequence that the UK lost some of its competitive edge. Mr Lester stated that IFR was committed to increasing the knowledge and technology transfer to industry. To this end the Institute had established the Food and Health Network (FHN), which would act as the industrial face of IFR, and would help business to use IFR's science more effectively to create industrial profit. The main objective of the Network was to make the Institute's scientific knowledge more accessible to the agri-food industry; he expanded on this by suggesting that its aims were to create an environment in which IFR scientists could meet industrial, technical and commercial staff to improve:

IACUC-Advanced GOAL: The Scientists Center for Animal Welfare (SCAW) has developed a new, advanced program to train members of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC): IACUC Advanced IACUCs are mandated by the Animal Welfare Act, PHS Policy and the FDA to oversee the welfare, care and use of animals used in research, testing and teaching. Therefore, IACUCs, composed of a veterinarian, a community member, scientists and nonscientists from the institution, play a very significant role in research animal well-being. IACUC Advanced will give IACUC members an opportunity to learn new information, to discuss complicated protocols with fellow IACUC members, and to keep current with new and developing events. METHOD: IACUC Advanced will provide one-day workshops held in different regions around the United States. Each workshop will be developed around Core I, II, and III. The format will let small groups discuss specific, complex topics that are relevant to IACUC functions. Each workshop will be structured in similar design, with slight changes made to update information and to meet special needs. For example, regulations and guidelines that affect IACUCs will not be discussed unless there has been a recent change that will impact IACUC protocol review. Specific example: The U.S. Department of Agriculture issues guidelines for recognition of pain and distress in laboratory animals.
