What is Scleroderma? Scleroderma is a disease of the vascular and immune systems, as well as a severe connective
tissue disorder. This disease can effect the skin, joints, blood vessels as well as other parts of the body.
Scleroderma is a chronic disease. It can last for months, years or a lifetime. as of yet, there is no cure, but it can be treated. With early detection and proper management, many people with scleroderma can lead full, productive lives. This disease is not contagious, and it is rare for direct family members to also contract the disease.
Scleroderma is a highly individualized disease that affects people in different ways. The following descriptions are intended to help you gain some knowledge about this disease.

Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder is an autoimmune process with symptoms of Scleroderma, Myositis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus , Rheumatoid Arthritis and/or other autoimmune diseases. It is a description of a group of symptoms occurring together. This is different from a diagnosis that describes the underlying process. It is a disorder of the immune system, which normally functions to protect the body against invading infections and cancers, and toxins. In Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder, as in other autoimmune diseases parts of the complex immune system is over-active and produces increased amounts of abnormal antibodies that attack the patient's own organs. Sometimes MCTD is called Overlap Syndrome or Undifferentiated Mix Connective Tissue Disorder. Some writers discriminate between them claiming that each of these are different. Some argue MCTD is not a distinct entity at all, and is just one of the forms of Lupus or Scleroderma. MCTD can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, heart, endocrine, digestive, and nervous system, blood vessels which all are made up of connective tissue. There are reports of psychiatric disturbances similar to those found in Lupus. The signs and symptoms of MCTD differ from person to person, with the symptoms of either Lupus, or Scleroderma, or Myositis or other autoimmune disease being most prevalent. Since its manifestations can vary it is often misdiagnosed. The disease can range from mild to life threatening. It can be mild for many years, and then after about 20 years of having the disease a medical crisis may occur. The lungs and kidneys are particularly at risk. Lungs and kidneys symptoms are particularly serious involvement and should be monitored vigilantly by both the doctor and the patient.

Scleroderma is a kind of skin disease of connective tissue caused by sclerosis of the skin. It is divided into two types: localized and systemic types. Generally, it undergoes through three stages, red swelling, sclerosis and atro phy. At the advanced stage, the affected skin will be adhered to the deep tissue and produce functional disturbance of corresponding organs. This disease is called (scleroderma). Main Points of Diagnosis Localized Scleroderma 1. Skin Lesion: Part of the skin has a sensation of burning heat and itching, then slightly elevated patches in red or purple color. The lesion may be tenioid or elliptical in shape, and its border is clear with purple halos around them. The central part is sunken and then the color of patches will become yellow, brown and pale. The skin will be indurated and adhesive to the subcutaneous tissue, then the cleavage lines will disappear. Its surface is smooth and then will become atrophied and thin, and will lose elasticity. There are branny desquamations and pigmentations on the skin lesion. 2. Symptoms and Signs: At first the patient may have an unusual feeling or a sense of itch, then the skin becomes blunt and insensitive.

SCLERODERMA F.A.Q. Revised April 22, 1998 (Minor Revision: July 25, 2002 Please address all comments and suggestions to: Ed Harris eharris@synnovation.com General Description Scleroderma (means "hard skin") is a rare connective tissue disorder characterized by abnormal thickening of the skin. It is generally considered to be an autoimmune disorder. There are two major variants of the disease, as well as other less common forms. The more serious form is usually called "diffuse Scleroderma " and is characterized by rapid development of skin thickening beginning with the hands, and face and extending to the arms and trunk. People with diffuse Scleroderma are at greater risk for developing internal organ involvement early in the course of the disease. The other major form is often called limited Scleroderma or CREST Syndrome. The name CREST is an acronym for its characteristic symptoms: calcinosis Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal involvement, sclerodactyly , and telangiectasia (these terms are discussed below). This form progresses more slowly and has a better prognosis.

Scleroderma
WHAT IS SCLERODERMA? Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disease that was first described in the 18th century. The term scleroderma means "hard skin," which describes thickening of the skin from increased deposits of collagen. CAUSE In most cases, the cause of scleroderma is unknown. However, in a small minority of cases, scleroderma or scleroderma-like illnesses are associated with exposure to certain toxins or as a complication of bone marrow transplants. Scleroderma is not contagious and is rarely inherited. Systemic sclerosis is associated with over-activation of the immune system, which normally functions to protect the body against cancers and invading infections. This causes damage to cells that line small blood vessels, which in turn leads to the over-production of scar tissue. HEALTH IMPACT
  • Scleroderma affects women more than men and adults more than children. 10-20 new cases are diagnosed per million people each year. Lung, heart and kidney damage are the most frequent causes of severe disability and death.

THE SCLERODERMA (SCL) FOUNDATION OF VICTORIA
WHAT IS SCLERODERMA ( SCL )
S c leroderma ( systemic sclerosis ) is a systemic connective tissue disease. One of the hallmarks is thickening or hardening of the skin. This is literally what the word scleroderma means in Greek - ( sclero=hard, derma=skin ). However, the term systemic sclerosis is probably a better name as it tells us more about the condition. This name indicates that (a) it is a systemic disease, that is, it may affect many parts of the body, and (b) sclerosis is the medical term for thickening or hardening of the tissues which is a major feature of this condition.
