http://www.re.org/adventures/scotland/theroad.html
Navigating the Road Growing up in America (the land of the car), you learn all about how roads are supposed to work, what the rules are, how to drive, and so on. When you set foot in Scotland, you can forget all that. The obvious difference is that you're driving on the "wrong" side of the street. Actually, this was only rarely a problem. So long as there are other cars to remind you which side they're on, it's easy to keep yourself straight. Even shifting with my left hand instead of my right just seemed right, given the conditions. The real differences start when you open your eyes, and have to figure out what all the road markings mean, what the local conventions are, and so on. You see a solid single line, what does it mean? How about a double line? How about a zig-zag line? Who has the right of way? And what's the deal with these roundabouts anyway? Of course, I knew all of these by the time we left, but I didn't actually take notes for what they mean, so the next time I see them, I'll be just as confused. The worst problem for me was one of terminology. My brain seemed to flip my American driving habits for driving on the "wrong" side, and even flipped some of the words! In America, a left turn is the one that's the long way around, and a right turn goes right next to the corner, and not across other traffic. My brain kept using these same words (left and right) to mean the same convention, rather than the direction. I kept calling right turns "left" because the right hand turn starts from the middle, and goes across some lanes before it gets to the turned direction.

Americans Abroad A short guide to learn how to be an American Abroad. Forget that you're in somebody else's home land. Demand things that you have come to expect as an American. Demand ice in your drinks. Demand fast service. Demand that people use your twisted variant on English, not theirs. Forget their local customs, yours are simply correct. And be obnoxious about it. Don't forget to keep telling all the locals how different they are. Remeber, the key to cross-cultural understanding is to TALK LOUD. Remember, all these people are here for your service. Don't let them forget it. If you aren't satisfied, be demanding and unforgiving. Don't forget the camera and camcorder. You'll want to live this experience over again and again. The Castle Everyone Would Love To Live In Ballindalloch Castle is one of the most beatiful and romantic castles in Scotland. It lies in the heart of whisky country with the distilleries of Glenfiddich, Glenfarclas and Glenlivet nearby. The setting is magnificent; surrounded by majestic hills, the tumbling waters of the rivers Spey and Avon flow throught the grounds. First and foremost Ballindalloch is a much loved family home and one of the very few privately owned castles to be lived in continously by its original family, the Macpherson-Grants, since 1546, It exemplifies the transition from the stark Tower house, necessary for survival in 16th century Scotland, to the elegant and comfortable country house so beloved of Victorians in the Highlands. Ballindalloch is also the home of the famous Aberdeen Angus herd of cattle founded by Sir George Macpherson-Grant in 1860, and now the oldest herd in continous existence.

Culture
Historically, the Scots have been under-represented in British art and music, but they have packed a mighty wallop in the worlds of science, literature and philosophy. Scots came up with logarithms, the second law of thermodynamics and the laws of electrodynamics; they revolutionised steam power and invented bitumen, waterproofing, the telephone, the television and radar. Scots have been pioneers in anatomy, antiseptics and the development of penicillin. One of them, Adam Smith, even came up with the wacky idea of the invisible hand of capitalism. The Scots attribute this impressive roll call to the country's long-standing emphasis on a good education. Scotland has an impressive artistic legacy, kicking off with the wild man himself, Robbie Burns, and is continuing this reputation, as Hollywood fetes members of the Mac Pack such as Ewen McGregor and Robert Carlyle, and literary festivals go gaga over grunge-and-drugs writers like Irvine Welsh. Perhaps the most famous icon of Scottish traditional culture is the Highland bagpipe, which achieved the height of its popularity during Queen Victoria's reign - she liked to be woken by one playing outside her window. Tartans, that other Scottish icon, date back to the Roman period, but were only associated with particular clans after the 17th century. Although kilts and other highland dress were banned after the Jacobite rebellions, they were revived in the following century. The mainstay of traditional culture was the

11 April 2003 BST An introduction to Scottish culture
Creativity and celebration on an international scale.
"I am a citizen of the world." David Hume, 1764.
Flowering Scotland
Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries on Earth, but its greatest minds have always been outward looking. To the deeply inquisitive Scots mind, beauty itself is not the whole truth. The quest to understand the physical world has produced some of the greatest innovators in the fields of science, medicine and engineering. And the quest to understand human nature has produced some of the world's greatest writers and philosophers.
A Festival nation
The establishment of the Edinburgh International Festival in 1947 was a landmark in the nation's post-war artistic fortunes. Its overwhelming success with the international arts community's focus on Scotland has led, in time, to Edinburgh itself now hosting nine major international festivals a year and being known as the Festival City. And this celebratory spirit of international as well as home-grown excellence is today echoed not only in Scotland's second great city, Glasgow, but far and wide from the Borders to the Highlands and Islands.
