Scotland Time and Date Scotland Culture Back to Top Clans, the traditional keystone of Scottish society, are no longer powerful (see Clan). Originally, the clan, a grouping of an entire family with one head, or laird, was also important as a fighting unit. The solidarity associated with clan membership has been expanded into a strong national pride. The Puritan zeal of Scottish Presbyterianism, which is traceable to John Knox, the 16th-century religious reformer and statesman, is also strong. Popular sports of Scottish origin include curling and golf. Bagpipes, usually associated with Scottish music, were probably introduced by the Romans, who acquired them in the Middle East. Scottish music is noted for the wide use of a five-tone, or pentatonic, scale. Folk tunes are not standardized, and a single song may have hundreds of variations in lyrics and music. More than three-fourths of the land is used for agriculture; approximately equal areas are devoted to farming and grazing. The most important crops are wheat, oats, and potatoes. Other crops include barley, turnips, and fruit. Livestock and livestock products are also of major importance. Sheep are raised in both the Highlands and island groups and the Southern Uplands. Scotland is also known for its beef and dairy cattle and for its dairy products.

Scotland's National Cultural Strategy
SCOTLAND'S CULTURE
A diverse but unique tradition
Scotland's culture is dynamic and diverse. It has developed and been shaped over many years by the experiences of Scotland's inhabitants and their contacts with others. Culture is notoriously difficult to define. Creating Our Future: Minding Our Past has been guided by a broad definition, in line with that adopted in 1982 by the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies. 'In its widest sense, culture may now be said to be the whole complex of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features that characterise a society or group. It includes not only the arts and letters, but also modes of life, the fundamental rights of the human beings, value systems, traditions and beliefs.' The creators of Scotland's culture
A wide range of people have key roles in presenting and representing culture, including artists, performers, poets, writers, architects, film-makers, sportspeople, broadcasters, journalists, advertisers, commentators, teachers, historians, curators, archivists and librarians. The experience and history of all Scotland's citizens are the key ingredients which make our culture distinctively Scottish. Innovation: creativity in action
Scotland's culture is dynamic and its capacity to respond to new influences and to integrate them with existing traditions has been an enduring strength. Many of the most recognisable symbols of Scotland's culture, such as piping and other traditional arts, had their origins in other countries. At the same time, ideas and techniques originating in Scotland continue to have an extraordinary influence throughout the world. The ability to adopt and adapt, allied to a capacity for innovation, mean that Scotland is well placed to respond to the accelerating trend towards globalisation while maintaining a culture which remains modern, distinctive and relevant to the experience of Scots.

Scotland's National Cultural Strategy
Our first national cultural strategy points the way for the Executive's policies for culture over the next four years. We shall work with a range of partners to implement the actions identified in the strategy and continue to pay attention to what people say. Better information about the quality and effects of opportunities, activities and events will guide decision-making. Taken together, this information will also enable us to evaluate the quality of provision nationally and to take stock of the progress of the strategy. We shall report progress to the Scottish Parliament on an annual basis.
Summary of strategic objectives, key priorities and supporting actions Strategic Objective 1:
Promoting creativity, the arts, and other cultural activity To promote the development of creativity, participation in the arts and other cultural activity we shall act to achieve three key priorities:
1. Facilitating a climate supportive to those working in the cultural sector

The Castle Everyone Would Love To Live In Ballindalloch Castle is one of the most beatiful and romantic castles in Scotland. It lies in the heart of whisky country with the distilleries of Glenfiddich, Glenfarclas and Glenlivet nearby. The setting is magnificent; surrounded by majestic hills, the tumbling waters of the rivers Spey and Avon flow throught the grounds. First and foremost Ballindalloch is a much loved family home and one of the very few privately owned castles to be lived in continously by its original family, the Macpherson-Grants, since 1546, It exemplifies the transition from the stark Tower house, necessary for survival in 16th century Scotland, to the elegant and comfortable country house so beloved of Victorians in the Highlands. Ballindalloch is also the home of the famous Aberdeen Angus herd of cattle founded by Sir George Macpherson-Grant in 1860, and now the oldest herd in continous existence.

Up to 8,600 jobs could be created in the Highlands if Inverness were to win European City of Culture status, it has been claimed. Scotland's newest city has put together a £300,000 bid to hold the title in 2008. If the bid is successful, it is thought the Highland capital's new status would attract thousands of jobs and see an increase in visitor spending of up to £233m. The claims have been made by Steve Westbrook, an independent consultant, whose work has led him to believe that city of culture status would result in up to four million extra visitor bed nights.

Please pardon the lack of detail in this review, since it has been a year. It gave me a good foundation for understanding many aspects of Scottish society and history. I did not want to read a simple tourist reference guide about the attractions of Scotland-I desired to know more about the people and culture. It turned out to be a terrific book was for me. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone going to Scotland who wants to get a comprehensive overview of Scotland, especially if it is their first time. I learned a lot from it.
