    Welcome to Culture Hebrides
Culture Hebrides is the first site dedicated to the culture of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and one of the ten fascinating VisitHebrides.com websites! The Hebrides is the home of an unique spiritual, civilised culture, the true heartland of the Gaels and the Gaelic language. Hebridean communities are close knit, friendly and safe: more in tune with nature and relaxed and contented with the rhythm of life. People will go out of their way to help you and have the time to be genuinely interested in what you have to say. A lively and vibrant culture, the Hebridean Celtic Festival, Ceòlas Music Summer School, the Harris Arts Festival and Barra Live are pioneering events that attract people to the Hebrides from all over the world. Ceòlas is an annual summer festival in South Uist with expert tuition in piping, fiddling, singing, dancing and the Gaelic language. Though focusing on Hebridean tradition, Ceòlas also has a strong Cape Breton dimension. Gaelic culture taken to Cape Breton by emigrants from the Gaidhealtachd nearly 200 years ago survived there in relative isolation. Now Ceòlas provides a unique opportunity to bring it all 'back home'. Celebration of cultural links between music, song and dance, and across the north Atlantic, is the School's hallmark. Pure traditional music also lives on, with the local mods a focal point for junior and adult choirs, musicians, storytellers, poets and actors. Fans of the pipes can hear the Lewis Pipe Band as they parade through Stornoway town centre every Saturday evening in summer.

    53. Scottish Nationalism
The Gaelic/Scots lobby continues to represent an important part of scotland's culture, and it is the SNP' policy to support moves for the further development
    http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/8366/scotland.html
Elsewhere on the Celtic fringe, the other economically based movement is found in Scotland, and is has successfully been represented by the Scottish National Party (SNP) . Other groups have advocated Scottish independence such as the Scottish Phalange and the Scottish Workers' Party, formed in 1920. There are others as well, some of which have resorted to violence, for example in 1972 members of the Worker's Party of Scotland were sent to prison for armed robbery. It was believed they were going to support separatist violence by robbing banks. Of all these groups, the SNP has been the most successful and has maintained a consistent presence and draws upon a long tradition of national independence, but its platform mentions little about culture or ethnicity. The support of Scottish Gaelic was never a priority until Donald Stewart, the SNP's representative from the Western Isles, worked for its official recognition. Craig Milroy, Assistant Research Officer for the Scottish National Party, elaborates on the non-viability of ethnic mobilization in Scotland: While there is no doubt that there are a number of features of Scottish culture and identity which are different from the perception of British culture, it is absolutely vital to stress that the case for Scottish independence is based on political argument, not culture or ethnic origin.
