The Picts Strathclyde ; and that of Northumbria (which also included northern England), founded by the Angles and settled largely by Germanic immigrants. The mission of St. Columba (563) from Ireland reintroduced Christianity to Scotland. The usages of the Celtic Church differed in various details from those of Rome, introduced in the south of Britain by St. Augustine. Conflict between the two was settled in favor of Roman usage decided at the Synod of Whitby in 663, but Scottish Christianity only slowly adopted the Roman forms. After the decline of the Northumbrian power in Scotland began the raids of the Norsemen, who harried the country from the 8th to the 12th cent. In 794 they attacked the islands off Scotland and soon returned to live in the Hebrides; by 870 they were established in what is now Caithness and Sutherlandshire. In the mid-9th cent. Kenneth I established his rule over nearly all the land N of the Firth of Forth. His descendants pushed into Northumbria and by the 11th cent. ruled all of present Scotland except N Pictland and the islands.

The History of the Perthshire area.
Perthshire's history is central to the story of Scotland. From Roman encampments, Pictish carved stones and castles through the ages, Perthshire has a rich and fascinating past. Great historical figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots, Rob Roy MacGregor, Bonnie Prince Charlie and of course Scotland's Kings, who were crowned at Scone, all have left their mark, with castles, churches, battlefields and historic sites to explore. Macbeth, Wallace, Bruce, Montrose, Rob Roy and Robert Burns have also contributed to the rich history of Perthshire. The ancient Highland Boundary Fault, which separates Highland and Lowland Scotland, passes right through Perthshire. The local geology is both varied and interesting. Earthquake House at Comrie monitors minor earth tremors which can still be felt from time to time as this process continues. Pontius Pilate was born, son of a Roman General, near the village of Fortingall. The Romans came as far North as Perthshire, with a huge camp at Braco, but could not conquer the fiercely proud people they encountered. In Fortingall the yew tree is reported to be around three thousand years old and has survived despite the old pagan tradition of lighting a fire underneath it.

Notable Dates in Scottish History
A note on time and dates in Scotland.

Julius Agricola advances across the River Clyde fighting off bands of warring celts.

The celtic tribes unite under Calgacus, but he is killed (along with 10000 men) when he meets the Roman army at Ardoch.

The Pictish people were first mentioned in Roman literature. The name "Pict" is said to have come either from a latin word meaning "painted ones" or another meaning "fighter". Both of these accurately depicted the Pictish people.

Roman literature describes the warring tribe based in Ireland as the "Scots".

The Pict, Scot and Saxon tribes attack the Romans in London and plunder their treasures.

The Scots leave Ireland and build their kingdom of Dalriada in Argyll on the West coast of Scotland.

St. Columba died.

Kenneth MacAlpin unites the Scots and Picts as one nation. This was the first step in creating a united Scotland, a process not completed until at least 1034 and perhaps much later.

Malcolm II kills Kenneth III and becomes King.

Malcolm II gains Lothian after defeating the Saxons at the Battle of Carham. Death of Owen-the-Bald, King of Strathclyde.

UK Phonebook GUIDE BOOKS Pitkin Guides London TRAVEL SERVICES Airport Transfers Car Rental A Brief History of Scotland: Introduction Presented by Peter N. Williams, Ph.D. On Thursday, December 18, 1997, Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar launched one of the most far-reaching changes to the British constitution by presenting a Bill to implement Scotland's first parliament in 300 years. The exuberant Secretary stated that the Bill was a more radical piece of legislation than dreamed of only one year before. The Scottish Parliament is expected to be fully operational by the year 2000, and the Bill itself should receive the Royal Assent during the second half of 1998 in time for elections to be held in the first half of the following year. Sovereignty would continue to rest ultimately with Westminster; the Queen would remain head of state for the whole United Kingdom and the Government in London would remain responsible for key "reserved" matters, including foreign policy, defense and national security. Thus, a powerful body of Scottish representatives would get together in a Parliament of their own for the first time since the Union with England and the abolition of the Scottish Parliament in 1707.
